I wouldn't have put it that way, but yeah. Wyu survives on name recognition and location. In other words, most people think she's their only choice. Her masks are decent, but way below the quality of most. If I was intent on spending a lot of money on a mask, I'd shell out for a mask I would be satisfied with.

I'm not trying to put ya'all down or anything, so don't take this the wrong way - but what's the appeal here? What about this do you like? Why do you like it?

I like it due to the anonymity it creates. I also really like how well it brings a character to life over cosplay. Plus I think it's cute as hell.

I'd love to do it but most masks run about $800~ and I just can't justify spending that much on a mask. I'd love to try making one but I live at home and would rather not go through that discussion. I can't even justify that much money for a computer part....

There are a lot of kigurumi better or worse. This is a good quality Japanese mask, but not the best (according to what people tell me). The sculpt itself is great.

There was some miscommunication about the hair. It doesn't look like other kigurumi's hair or what I expected. I declined a remake because it would involve repainting the mask and it wouldn't be much of an improvement. The painting is really good.

2-2 1/2 months I think it was.

I think Kawaii sculpt is better, but Wyu's hair is better. I like these too:

I like it from a cosplay point of view. The costumes are usually professionally-made so they're accurate and well-sewn, and the masks give the performers proportions similar to the artwork the character is based on. It's like seeing your favourite character step off the page, like when you were a kid and went to Disneyland for the first time.

I first got introduced to kigurumi through the professionally-produced stage shows in Japan (used by companies like Toei to promote their kids' anime), so at least I got shown the best examples first. The quality varies wildly amongst amateur kigs and it's usually the worst, most ugly examples that get shown in the "shock threads" that get posted on websites or blogs. There's also the Uncanny Valley thing, but I just look at them like theme park mascots instead of living dolls or whatever.

Yeah, there's a fetish appeal for some people but you can say that about anything these days. It's certainly not universal and there's actually a strong (in my opinion, too strong, bordering on fanatical) movement within the kigurumi fandom to get rid of the fetish elements and reputation.

I think it varies like anything else. I've seen some amateur masks that were pro-standard (pic related) and some pro masks that were pretty substandard (IMO, the Fresh Precure masks). But the professional ones tend to be *consistently* better.

Interesting note though: SIGMA have actually been commissioned by a couple of companies to produce official kig masks for them. For example, they're behind the official Twin Angel kigs (pictured).
