Why is it so difficult to overcome? Why can't I be happy like other people?

Why are you depressed? Anguish or just apathy?

Whenever I am depressed I read a philosophical text, sometimes it helps me out, but at the very least it always offers something to put my mind on.

Loneliness, mostly. But I also feel like my life has stagnated. Like there's nothing in my life besides work. No friends, no girlfriend, no social life. It feels like all my peers and colleagues are moving ahead of me in life, and there's nothing I can do change my situation. Also, add in a mix of low self-esteem, very self-conscious on how I look, etc, etc.

You're loneliness is something you have to come to terms with, it is possible to be alone and not lonely. The same with you're self consciousness and low self esteem. As for the idea that they're moving on and you're being left behind, I'm not quite sure on how to deal with that, I'm suffering it too, but I don't let it get to me.

Change your values Anon. Everyone in /jp/ is here for you, and according to us having a girlfriend/social life is a bad thing. We don't care what you look like, of whether you work a good job or not. As long as you can keep living each day to get home and read through some good VNs, you've got something worth living for. It's not like anything you accomplish in your life really matters anyway, so just learn to take it easy.

Some people can. I used to be "depressed", I took pills and everything, but eventually I changed my way of thinking and "got over" it, and now I don't take pills anymore and am pretty happy with my life. Although, I suppose one could say that I never actually had a real mental illness, and I wouldn't be able to say anything to disprove them.

well there are generally 2 types of depresion, one that is mostly a psychological problem and can be 'got over' with psychotherapy or effort alone, and one that's strictly related to chemical imbalance in the brain and will only respond to meds. of course most people with depression have a mix of the two, but you get my point. seems you just got the first one.
i wouldn't really call beating depression 'getting over it', even when one doesnt use meds and stuff.

>> No.7233666

Happiness by definition is fleeting. Sometimes you're feeling really good, most of the time you're struggling with emptiness or frustration or wondering what the fuck you are doing on this planet. Everyone alive feels like this, doesn't matter if you're "successful" or not. You're not unique nor are you ever going to really "get over it". It's just the human condition - even Buddha said that life is suffering. Accept it, relax, take it easy, and enjoy whatever you can.

Why do you come to 4chan? Why don't you get some friends? try to get laid, do something besides going on 4chan to try and act like a pretentious shitdick. If you had anybody in your life who actually wanted to listen to what you had to say you wouldn't be doing this, and if you weren't a complete piece of shit you would realize that nobody is going to read your point of view you faggot. Just stop or kill yourself, either or is fine with me.

My problem is the fact that life if finite, that even if we were so lucky as to have the "technological singularity", even if by some absurd fortune the full technological of life extension was shared with the masses; that even then one would have a last day, matter would decay into photons, and the universe would become large and cold, and unable to support anything more complex than a low density of light traveling across it, interacting with nothing.
Thinking about the abyss of eternity makes me sad. And has done for about 10 years, my only cure is to try and force such things from my mind and distract myself with the transient whims of life. This isn't something that one can just "get over".

Sorry, didn't see you there.

God, 4chan in general needs to grow the fuck up.
Ask about ANYTHING on a specialist board and the only response you'll get is "lol kill urself fget".
Ask a question about computers on /g/?
Want to know about an anime on /a/?
Ask /sci/ for help with a math problem?
Ask /mu/ if they can recommend a band?

I thought you peopled liked the subject, so why the elitism? Don't you want to help other people learn about what you like?
People aren't born with this knowledge you know, you're all pretty selfish to ignore someone who is asking a question about a subject that you are supposedly passionate about, it wouldn't take any of you more than a minute to answer my question.

You just have to change the way you think about things. To me, the idea that the world will someday end is comforting. It means that no matter how hard I fuck things up, none of it will really matter in the long run. If any part of my life was actually eternal or significant, the pressure to get that part right would drive me insane.

It's kind of like that moment when you realize that posting anonymously on 4chan is a thousand times more fun and rewarding than posting with a trip.

-Depression makes it hard to heal yourself from depression. It saps away at your energy.

-With that being said - get counseling now.

-Keep looking around for counselors/therapists/whatever until you find someone who says things that make the most sense to you.

-Depression does set you apart from most people. It is a very tough experience.

-Do not necessarily reject medication. Ask around.

-Depression can influence your health very quickly. Exercise and some dietary changes can help you out somewhat.

-Sometimes, go out and talk a walk to clear your head. Go out at 4 in the morning if you fear people that much.

-Sometimes, severe depression can change you. It is a trauma, and must be treated as such.

-Above all, keep an eye on yourself. Introspect.

Just some thoughts on depression that some of you may find useful.
