Is Japan the only country to have such an enormous indie culture (Comicket, Reitaisai, etc.)?

I don't know if it's the only one, but the reason is the lack of legal barriers, such as copyright. Or rather that they exist but almost never get enforced, because doing so would be detrimental to everyone.

Is Japan the only country to have doujin conventions? Yes because that's actually legal under Japanese law.

Meanwhile in Yurop and Murrika, indie movie festivals have grown so large that they're almost commercial. Indie games get churned out so much that no one cares. Fanfiction? There's so much of that shit that it's a blight upon the internet. Indie music is so big it's got it's own degree of hipster acceptability.
