The Japanese attitude towards history is one the things I like about their popular culture the most.
Living in a country chock-full of museums, monuments, and national holidays, where our history is treated like SERIOUS BUSINESS all the time and god forbid someone tries to present it with a sense of humor or in anything but positive light made me really appreciate Japanese relationship with their past.

Making an eroge takes too much effort and doesn't pay off nearly enough.
You don't get respect or recognition, because you're making porn, so it would need to be a labor of love - which cuts down the amount of people who would be willing to make it nearly to nothing. And if you factor in that they would need skills to make something decent, it dwindles down to zero.

It's not really comparable - because Japan does both of those things.
On a massive scale.
It's not limited to one thing, it's in manga, games, movies, whatever you want. It's not a niche.
Watch Goemon, it's a nice example.
Not to mention, I don't live in the states, my country is way more uptight about its history, all of the more loose interpretations of the past are strictly relegated to counterculture.
