This is not entirely correct.

Some hikikomori are as such by choice, they're more like people who gave up on life.
The real majority of hikikomori, though, are people with severely crippling anxieties and even some mental illnesses that make them very ill-fit for society. The fact that this girl might be one of the latter makes this very sad indeed.

Yes you see people say "autism" and "aspergers" as generic internet insults, but they're actual disorders for some people that can be very taxing, both for them and their caretakers.

However, in regards to the parents actions, it is often such a case for parents with autistic children, because they don't understand their special needs. It is very unfortunate.

He obsesses over Trains, Plains, and all things military. Has been on honor roll in school since he started, and has a pretty good social life from what I've seen.
