There was a hydrogen explosion at Plant 3 as well. Unlike with the previous plant issues, news agencies and officials ARE saying that this one, in the worst case, has potential to be as bad as Chernobyl as the fuel rods are exposed. This explosion took place at 11:08 following a 6.0 aftershock. The plant was also effected by the second Tsunami, and efforts are being made to cool it down.

Meanwhile, radiation at Plant 1 has lowered back to normal levels. Plant 6 is still being cooled as its cooling unit has failed completely.

Source is NHK and Asahi.

It was the top headline two hours ago, you should be able to find it no problem. The comparison to Chernobyl is NOT about mechanics or what sort of reaction would take place but rather the amount of damage, displacement of people, and radioactive proliferance. Yes, people are not as stupid as they were back when they were Soviets, but nuclear power can still go wrong. These are not my words, by the way, but the words of officials. The OFFICIALS are now saying that in the worst case scenario, that is the -worst case- scenario, the event at plant 3 would be comparable to the Chernobyl disaster.

Just because something is alarming do not label it as alarmist the second you read it.

To the guys saying HERP DERP CHERNOBYL CANT HAPPEN AGAIN ITS PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE I KNOW BECAUSE IM A PHYSICIST WITH A MASTERS DEGREE IN SOCIOLOGY AND SECURE ARCHITECTURE:

Plant 3 uses a highly experimental fuel called Mox (mixed-oxide), and the fuel rods are currently exposed without coolant. The reporting agency who works with Fukushima is called TEPCO, who has a track record for dramatically obfuscating facts. They continue to say there is no risk and when things go wrong they issue correction statements and assure us things are under control.

They are not. New York Times reported today that the steam releases could last months. This means radioactive material will be leaking out for months. Furthermore, there is a great deep sea movement which will likely trigger another strong quake over the next three days.

FURTHERMORE, a volcano on Kyushu has begun to spew ash and rock into the sky. A second Tsunami warning was just issued at 11:38 Japanese time. Seven people are missing from the explosion at Plant 3.

The disaster at Chernobyl will not get a carbon copy replica no matter what because of shitty Soviet designs. However, up to 300,000 people may have died and it created one of the largest ghost towns in the world.

THAT is what can very well happen in Japan.
