Can somebody _PLEASE_ explain why this "Touhou" is so popular?

Zun can't draw. The characters are boring and similar to each other, with superpowers and characteristics so absurd it makes me want to cry.
90% of all Touhou content is made by fans, so official Touhou content is almost non-existent, however Zun still gets all the credit for creating this "phenomenon".
Just think. The characters aren't hot, the fan-made pics are.

Seriously, even I could design better characters and a better fictional universe than this Touhou crap.
And I will. Just wait. I will wipe Touhou off this planet. I'm well aware I'm just a butthurt character designer whose work is unknown to the public. But I'm butthurt for a reason, I know I'm worlds beyond this bland Touhou addiction.

It seems that Japan have so many good artists that they just stopped caring about the quality of art. If you don't count the character portraits, Touhou is good for a doujin game, and especially good for a one man project.

By the end of the story, I nearly barfed at how much of a overly dense and terrible Mary Sue Shirou was (dark past, power that can defeat anything, having all of the girls even though he has no qualities) and how terrible the plot twists were. Way to go Nasu! I am NEVER reading anything Type-Moon again!

Actually, Touhou is not really one thing.
There are Touhou (canon, ZUN drawings, games), Touhou (kawaii desu ne?~ xD, *fap fap fap*), and Touhou (over nine thousands arranges circles).
These three facets are very distinct and many Touhou "fans" are only interested in one or two of them. Taken as such, Touhou isn't actually *that* popular.
