Any other VNs that have strong enough gameplay elements that they could stand on their own?
Or does it stop being a VN at that point?

Plenty, all the games by Liar-soft that I've played and all the games by Studio E-go.

I prefer Studio E-go because of the artwork but admit that 90% of their games are very weak. If you DO actually want to give one a try I would suggest the Izumo series which is superior to any others they have.

My Fair Angel was also fun.

..... yeah that's true. Their games aren't made for gameplay but as a method to distribute porn.

I'll plug My Fair Angel a second time though, it's Princess Maker with sex with your own biological (homunculus) daughter and that's just awesome. The gameplay was cute and fun.

If a game could stand alone without the porn? Tough question, depends on what you like I guess but most are made for their porn.
