I'm not making direct comparisons. That would be silly. In hindsight, I should have written this in the OP.

I think of Saya as being the Portal of VNs; considered one of the best examples of the medium, despite being relatively short. Both of them feature great characters/voice acting, music, pacing, are thought-provoking, etc.

Katawa has important parallels to Recettear, namely that both of them came out of nowhere from indie groups and got where they are today through a demo. The localizers for Recettear said that 40% of the people who played the demo bought the game.

I think it would be more accurate to say that they both have an interesting gimmick, and while neither has a whole lot to them, what they do present leaves little to criticize. Still, I wouldn't call either the "best" of its medium.
