Its kind of neat, Rinnousuke being a character of passiv knowledge and observation, generally playing role as a teacher of the more cerebral and even philosophical things, to the younger figures he often converses with.

One thing that mildly confuses me is why does Yukari decide to make a sort of trade bargain with him, if she has decently free access to the outside world, what use does she have for any of this stuff.

Another thing that bothers me, is that the chapter with the gameboy. His ability is described as being able to see something's name, but not how its used, so why is it that he doesn't see it as gameboy but somehow sees it as some horrific tool of remote destruction, which although incorrect, sounds more like a use than a name

unless the japanese name for gameboy was something far more evil sounding.

So fucking what? We're discussing a fantasy land invented by a drunk programmer with a hat fetish who has made canon a loli who constructs pseudomagical TANKS to bring into combat, among other crazy shit. Who gives a fuck about CANON JUSTIFICATION? This isn't a canon argument. Canon has jack shit to say about the matter either way. What we ARE doing is discussing thematically-appropriate ways in which firearms from the Outside could have status as dangerous and viable weapons inside Gensyoko, which in turn leads us to apply the characteristics of mythical legendary weapons:

-- Created by magical beings noted for craftsmanship (dwarves, gnomes, kappa, Wayland Smith, etc) and often bequeathed as a gift when the hero seeks supernatural aid (lady in the lake, etc.) In the case of firearms, the role of a "legendary creator" can easily be filled by the weapon designer, who are quite often legendary figures themselves (John Moses Browning, for example,) and the particular weapon could be his first prototype, or first off the production line.

-- Wielded in fierce combat by a great hero. Often the weapon will not serve a lesser man, or merely be unusable by somebody without the skill to really exploit the weapon's potential. This step might augment or replace step #1, depending on how you want to spin it.

-- Often lost again, or retained until it is needed again.

Is that good enough?

Though having a history of use could take place of its origin, its probably better if it had both, you know, to stack up on

If I might borrow from PCB's prologue:
"Thanks to their magical culture, youkai could easily breach the barrier around Gensokyo. However, they chose not to do so; in fact, they strengthened the seal in order to prevent more humans from entering."

at the time that it was initially sealed off, the seal was weaker in some aspects then it is now.

Besides, although things were contemporary at that point, it doesn't mean whatever was in there didn't pass into the realm of legend then forgotten, there are stories of things like villages disappearing

No, canon does not, not as directly as you or anybody else is trying to imply. Gensyoko is a big mythology mashup, what flies in mythology is generally what flies in Gensoyoko. That's not exactly something you need to take a microscope to canon to confirm, is it? Looking at mythological weapons in, well, mythology seems to be more helpful then examining the meager information about the one or two legendary weapons used in Gensyoko, to my thinking.

Not that it matters, though. I was just trying to head off BUT BUT CANON DOESN'T SUPPORT THIS WITH THIRTY CROSS-REFERENCED EXAMPLES-style autism.

Seeing how youkai are akin to western mythical creatures including demons I don't see why it couldn't work.

If some kanji with exorcism inscriptions can fend of youkai and oni, maybe you could enchant your weapon of choice to have the same thing.

I'd love to have a Dane axe with some holly runes on it though.

>implying autism is not a valid concern

... you do remember you're on /jp/, right? I've got two .PDFs on my hard drive detailing the "pro" and "con" arguments for the "Endor holocaust," which involve both sides noting that the proportions of Endor versus the Death Star were horribly wrong, if you stop and do the math - and then go right on to use those measurements from the screenshot to do orbital physics calculations without ever once stopping and saying "OH WAIT, THIS IS JUST A FUCKING MOVIE, THE CINEMATOGRAPHERS SACRIFICED PROPER SCALE TO MAKE GOOD SHOTS SO PERHAPS MAKING SWEEPING ARGUMENTS ABOUT GENOCIDE BASED ON TWO FRAMES OF THE FUCKING FILM IS STUPID." Even though the creators, Word Of God, have come right out and said as much. Over on stardestroyer.net, they have listed "denying the Endor holocaust" as a reason for permanently banning people, if that gives you an idea of how DEADLY SERIOUS they take this bullshit.

Autism exists. I've fucking SEEN it.
