No, Chen and Ran are both shikigami not tamed pets.
They are possesed by the shikigami spirit as long as they act under their masters order no matter the distance.

Where was it stated that Chen gets weaker the further she is from Ran? I never read that.

Ran has to endure enough hardship, don't humiliate that poor girl further by making her into a mere pet.

That's not true. She is a youkai beast herself.
Even if she is not possesed her physical strenght is infinitely stronger than a humans and she moves fast enough to make it seem like she can teleport.
