It really isn't as hard/scary as you think. I started cutting my own hair about 2 years ago for the same reason. I was worrying about how I would mess it up if I cut it myself, what tools I need, etc...but one day I just went into my bathroom and chopped my hair off with scissors on impulse. I had nothing to lose because I already looked like shit anyways. Might as well look like shit and feel comfortable.

I did fuck up a lot and my hair was an uneven mess, but eventually you learn and improve just like with other things. I use regular scissors (the shitty ones with the plastic handle) and a hair razor.

I say go for it.

I had a buzz-cut last summer (I always cut it myself), but I've let it grow since then.

It's getting to the point where it looks ridiculous 3 days after I've washed it, but then the natural grease starts kicking in and it looks alright, although a bit on the long side. Some 6cm or so, I'd say.

The worst part of it is one the back of my head since it probably looks like shit hanging down my neck like that.
I did cut the sides a bit with a pair of scissors which made it look alright. Couldn't see/do much on the back, though.
