What's a good show to watch in Japanese to learn Japanese? I took Japanese for 3 years in highschool and now that I graduated I need something to keep the ball rolling. When I watch normal anime in Japanese I only catch bits and pieces of the dialogue so that's no good. I think I need a little kids show. Any ideas?

(sorry if this is the wrong board)

Not op, but I too am wondering if there's like some Dora the Explorer equivalent that teaches you Japanese.

I'd recommend constant immersion. I have Japanese podcasts on my iPod and have KeyholeTV (radio/TV) running pretty the whole time I'm awake.

Check out AJATT.

OP here. I wonder if azumanga daioh would be good. Anyone know? I've seen some of it in english and the talking and everything was really slow. Might be good.

If you think you can learn Japanese from watching any sort of anime you're delusional. Learning to read, write and speak Japanese at a moderate level of competence will require a significant amount of time and effort, especially when it comes to kanji. The language learning business isn't for the faint of heart, but if you're truly serious I suggest you get the genki books for some basic grammar and then proceed to learn the 2000 or so joyo kanji.

Did you even read my post? I took Japanese for 3 years. I completed genki 1 & 2 and I think I know around 1000 kanji, though I'm concerned more with speaking. I already know basic grammar. I just need to "keep the ball rolling" as I said so I don't forget everything and so I can continue to pick up vocab.

Try variety shows, they tend to spell out what people are saying and they're pretty stupid content-wise. As a plus, they tend to have normal speech.

You should be able to understand more than bits and pieces then. Anyway I suggest NOT watching kiddie anime. Instead stuff like listening to Japanese radio shows or watching the news in Japanese will help you improve much faster. I don't feel like explaining it here in its entirety but there's this linguistic theory called the 'input principle' which basically states something like "enough exposure to a target language will help you improve after a certain critical amount of exposure", basically just listening to a target language influences the brain structures that process those sounds.
