For beginners
Everything you need to know about tenhou itself can be found here http://arcturus.su/tenhou/

Hand Calculator: http://no-info.no-ip.info:6224/mj/mahjong.html

Please read 2-3 sites before playing and even then try the singleplayer games first.
Playing without knowing what you do is not only frustrating for yourself but also for your opponents, a player that left because he couldn't ron for his no Yaku hand or because someone ron'd his discard just kills the whole fun for everyone.

Usually, a game lasts around 30 minutes, so please, if you're not going to stay until the end, respect the other players and don't join a new game.

Also keep in mind that Mahjong is more a game of "not losing" than straightforward winning.
Furthermore you play with 3 other people and luck plays a big part in it, so don't expect to win more than 1 out 4 games, especially not as a beginner.

If you read some of the linked sites and still have questions feel free to ask.

Yeah, but there are times when they are filled with 300 replies, and times were they fall off the board without even being bumped once. But I'd say there are around fifteen L7447 regular players or so on /jp/, and when they're playing, the thread lives a bit longer. Also It's been a while since we've seen any new players. Since the golden "Norwayfag VS KoG" era. I guess our good old textwall OP keeps the noephytes away, which is a bit sad.

Choose 1.

I don't have most of my pictures on this computer but for example, how often do you pass up winning / aim for certain people with hidden tenpai in 3 player, never? Figured. How often do you have a chance at a big hand, but trash it because you can't deal a single tile in 3 player? Often. But why you ask, because you always have fucking big hands. How fucking boring is that.

You will never know the joy of getting a yakuman in the dan and 4+ dan 4 player rooms, which is the mahjong equinoctial of getting laid by that girl you really like because she has a lot of the same interests as you but has a boyfriend who drinks every night and is failing out of school.

You need more skill in 3P compare to 4P.
I am not even trolling. It is so hard to make a big hand in 4P that you will never have a chance to come back after a dealer tsumo mangan/haneman.
Just cause you grinded to 4dan doesnt mean you are good. I am not going to pay just to access the higher dan room.

In 3P you have to weight score/risk, aim for a specific guy, mind games to get the faggot to play your winning tiles and etc.
In 4P? Betaori forever and hope you get 2nd or first when you dealer ippatsu tsumo.

>It is so hard to make a big hand in 4P that you will never have a chance to come back after a dealer tsumo mangan/haneman.
Bullshit. A dealer haneman puts you at a definite advantage but is in no way a guarantee you'll win. Mangans aren't rare at all.

>In 3P you have to weight score/risk, aim for a specific guy, mind games to get the faggot to play your winning tiles and etc.
You just described 4P, I think.

>In 4P? Betaori forever and hope you get 2nd or first when you dealer ippatsu tsumo.
Betaori forever and rely on luck? Hardly, knowing when to start taking apart your hand is and when to take risks are integral parts of mahjong. I'm sure 3P isn't much different in that regard.

I've never played 3P myself but I'm under the impression that the vocal parts of the "4P crowd" overstate its simplicity. Sure, it's easier to make huge hands but that holds true for the opponents as well. On a similar note, the "3P crowd" seems to have some really oddball opinions of normal play. Nothing that has been said of why it's supposedly boring (or "requires less skill", that one was new) has really struck home with me.

I guess I should try 3P sometime but it doesn't seem very interesting to me. To each their own.
