Yeah, sure, you got an excuse but I just don't see the point to storing things like old songs, TV show episodes or anime on your harddrive after you watch it. I mean, you might be collecting episodes per se, but it's just dead weight you'll probably never go back to again.

I guess one of the basic human instincts is to possess things, even if you don't really need them.

It is literally three clicks from your mouse. One to drag a box and select stuff, one right click and one to select the delete option. You can even save yourself some time and just hit the Delete key on your keyboard. Then WHY? What is the mindset behind leaving thousands of files suffering on your harddrive, knowing they will never ever be used again? For what purpose was that part of your brain born, the part that just loves to listen to the poor data screaming and begging for its life as it is stuck in a tiny, cramped and poorly illuminated box?

Why?

I, for one love my files, and deleting them from my storage drives makes me feel bad.
If a show has made it there, it stays.

Back in the days when I only had my laptop and a measly 320GB external HDD, I'd delete shows every now and then.
Even if they weren't all that bad.

Lately I've been downloading them again (usually as DVD rips) so I could feel better about deleting them back then.

Oh, and OSad; does anyone play World of Tanks anymore, by the way?
I haven't been on mumble for weeks, but I play that Supremacy 1914 game.

Most people have given up on WoT due to the hard wipe, though no actual hard wipe has yet happened, and there has been some talks that there won't actually be any wipe at all. Also, everyone moved to a new server due to not liking Hitler very much. I can give you the new address if you want.

Quite the interesting read. So people don't delete their files simply because they don't know what to do with it, so they put it off and hope they don't have to deal with it later? Interesting.

>6993893
Oh, come on. Even if you needed a very specific file on that sea of clutter, with technology these days you can simply look it up on google and download it on a timely fashion. The internet, per se, is your personal harddrive. There is nothing that cannot be found if you spend enough time and effort on it.

I have a separate junk folder where I dump the files that I never or rarely use. They have nostalgic value to me, and as long as I have space, I see no reason to delete them.

Indeed. Your drives need individual names even less than each one of your personal horde of slaves does. If you need to constantly remember where your data is stored physically, your setup plain sucks.

Copycat! My currently half-functioning laptop is Yuki. Soon to be replaced by a new one which will be named Mai, Yuki relegated to server role. Portable will be Luize.

>hostnames based on the type of system along with its purpose and processing power

At the risk of reinforcing a /g/ thread...

This may seem like a good idea at first, but typically doesn't work out all that well. If you have just a few hosts, you ought to choose a name that makes you go like "patchouli... oh, that cute little violet-white box in the bedroom" with as little conscious thought as possible. Maybe stick a picture or put a figure nearby to help reinforce the mental association, too.

Picking something highly descriptive like "pc1-athlon1800-1g" is tempting, but a) easy to mistype, and b) subject to change in just a few years.

But to each their own, of course...

I name them after what they do, so my drive I install whatever I decide to be my primary OS, I name "System drive" then program drives for anything i install thereafter, sometimes a drive for alternate OS (the linux drive), and the bulk data drive where I save/download stuff.

I don't have any of my externals plugged in, but they're called "Media backup", and "hideyhole" (derp).

That's exactly what I'm talking about, though. My main gaming machine is Misaka, for example. (Fucking 200 USD electric bill.) Primary-use machines get names of sub-characters, while laptops and palmtops get names of small characters - main laptop is Cirno.

Oh, I see. I took the "based on" part a little more literal than that at first.

Well, I'm afraid this small rant has been entirely lost on the majority of posters in this thread, anyway.

It's a meme that exists on /g/ and is used to comment on an obsolete technology, or just one they don't like for whatever reason. So, don't ever take it seriously. Serious reply would be "That's what SSDs are best used for" so you're fine.

Still need a name for the system that actually holds the backups from everything else. Only name I can come up with that fits at all is Patchouli, but that seems to be more fitting to the VM that tracks the status of everything on the network.
