My class is 9 chapters into An Integrated Approach to Japanese (the books that follow Genki) and I've been having trouble understanding/translating the 読み物. Back when my classes used Genki, the class used to tranlate together but now they don't.
Do translations exist anywhere on the internet? I don't want to have to go ask someone in real life to help me translate.

I do pay attention in class. I just don't fully understand the readings because they have grammar and vocab that we haven't even learned yet.

As a side note, what are some good strategies for memorizing vocabulary. I just finished memorizing the Kana, and Im not 100% sure what the best way to continue is.

Any strategies, resources, or tips you can provide for self-teaching Japanese are appreciated.

Takeshi's fucking beta. Wang Peng from the Chinese books is so much better.

Also, does anyone have that picture of Mary smoking topless? I saw it the other day but didn't save it.

>> No.6973033

As a side note: what's the best way to study after you learn the kana? I just finished memorizing the kana and I'm not sure if I should simply drill vocabulary and grammar until it sticks or memorize phrases, or start learning kanji already.

Any suggestions, strategies, or resouces for self-learning Japanese is appreciated.

Many people use flashcards. I just write the character, pronunciation, and definition over and over again.

Learning kanji and vocabulary should go together. I feel like vocabulary is just something that comes along while reading or listening to stuff. Grammar is something that you have to study, so maybe you should try harder on that.

Y'all got Takeshi? We always had Ishida and Tanaka in our textbooks. And yeah, Wang Peng is superior.

My mind didn't register the 'the', and I thought you were asking us to translate the word 読み物 for you. So hey, at least you're not quite as pathetic as I thought you were, right?

>They’ve been doing this dance for nearly a year now. In the absence of fluency, they learn to read between clumsy lines of a second language: a coy look here, fingers brushing there when Wang Peng asks Li You if she’d like a glass of pi jiu, eyebrows waggling while the condensation on the beer glass runs slick across her palm.

>They’ve been following a script ever since the day she spilled all her pencils on him, the casual weekend dates and homework sessions at Wang Peng’s apartment, that forlorn and knowing look that Gao Wenzhong gives them both. A trip to the movies, a dinner bill, some inane conversation about his family, or her last Chinese test, or their hobbies of the week.

>One day, Li You thinks, with a wry look at an oblivious Wang Peng, they’re going to end up married.

If there's any word you don't know just throw it in the Rikai chan lookup bar. It'll give you the definition of the word as well as the meaning and readings of each of the kanji.
Also Windows has an IME pad where you can just draw the kanji and you can then easily copy and paste it into an online dictionary

If you don't need that Google's IME is better. I found I spent more time memorizing the input numbers on the kanji with the windows one than the actual kanji. (Google IME sorts them by most used.)

>> No.6973374

Read a VN with Translation Aggregator. Every time you see a word you don't remember, look at its meaning. After a few times things will start to stick in your head.

I've got that exact same book.

Why are japanese numbers so hard.

Telling time is so hard.

Telling age is hard.

Math is hard

>> No.6973405

>>6973377
What's hard about telling age? The only one you have to look out for is 二十歳 (pronounced はたち instead of にじゅうさい)
Numbers in themselves are pretty easy and a lot more logical than in other languages, for most parts. It's just the almost infinite amount of counters and the special cases with time and dates which will take a bit more of memorizing.

>> No.6973407

>>6973374
This actually works really well. I've been running a few VNs with AGTH and the Rikai Chan lookup bar, and damn did I learn so many words.
