I find this extremely offensive. I was up until 5 am last night playing Civ5. I was pretty close to a cultural victory, just had to build that building which gives you the victory, which would only take 12 turns. Then the Egyptians suddenly declared war on me. I wasn't too prepared for a battle, since I played very peacefully and never pissed anyone off, but I built a few mobile SAMs and had the Himeji castle and the policies that give you bonus when fighting inside your own territory, so I thought that holding them off for 12 turns wouldn't be that hard. Until he dropped his fucking nuke on me, destroying most of the few units I had to defend myself with, and cut down the population of my capital to the point where it would take 20 turns to build it.

Ruined my whole evening. There's just no way to defend against a nuke.

That's what you get for being a peacenik.

Next time kill your enemies properly.

If nothing else, at least secure your home continent.

>> No.6952805

>>6952770
But then you're forced to keep the capitals of all those other cities, which makes it harder to adopt new policies.

That's what you get for playing Civ5. It won't be patched into decency for at least another 9 months minimum.

I always go for a fuckhuge amount of cities. As long as you stay on top of getting culture producing buildings and making landmarks everywhere, you'll outpace the increase in culture cost with all the culture you can generate with a large empire.

That, and there's the whole not-getting-your-ass-whooped thing to give you a little safety net to fall back on.

The complete brokenness of ICS is what made me swear off Civ5 until they fixed that shit.

ICS?

Infinite City Sprawl. The basic mechanic is that cities don't actually become drains on your economy until they reach size 4-5, so if you pack them in like sardines across the entire continent with only a few large ones for stuff like wonders, you end up better off in every single category since they naturally stay small, and you end up with a huge specialist economy. Maritime citystates make the problem even worse since you can do it even in the giant deserts.
It was a problem in Civ3 too. Civ4 gave a huge hit to your economy just from founding cities, but you could still do it with certain setups, it just took luck getting the wonders you needed and the holy cities to make sure everything was well-supported.

>>6952869
Was misremembering. ICS started getting corrected in Civ3, but Civ4 is the one that really made it a non-issue. It's practially unbeatable in 1/2/AC/5 though.
