So who are /jp/'s favorite composers?

My favorite is probably Chopin, no contest, but I do love me some Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Liszt, Alkan, Prokofiev, and Mahler as well.

Good taste friend. Mahler is awesome, seems like you play the piano. My favorites are Bach, Beethoven, Mahler and Dvorak.

Sonatas are awesome and here is a beautiful one by Tartini! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YonqEbar8cM

Oh so you noticed! Indeed, I've been playing the piano for about 13 years now. I love concertos, solos, and small ensembles but some symphonies are too amazing to ignore.

My favorite Mahler is Symphony 9.

I actually saw Dudamel conduct Mahler's 9th with the LA Phil a couple weeks ago. I thought it was an excellent interpretation of the piece.

Though Ravel is undoubtedly one of the best orchestrator of all time, I actually prefer the original Piano version of this. It's a really intimate piece, and the full orchestra just feels a bit too grand for it (even with the subdued orchestration).

>> No.6946708

>>6946694
The orchestra version, I feel, has a very atmospheric feel to it as if you're immersed in the scenery the music illustrates. The piano version is more like an intimate conversation where one person is describing a tale.

I like both a lot.

Shostakovich

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OF3XT3zHO10

Most people know him by his 7th Symphony and the excerpt "Leningrad" (it was in Haruhi) from it but I think his 8th Symphony is the pinnacle of his career as a composer. He really began to experiment with dissonance and you can really hear the anguish and emotion on the piece whereas the 7th Symphony was a grand Soviet composition, the 8th Symphony was really when Shostakovich's style began to mature.
