hi /jp/! i'm brand new to playing touhou games. i've read through touhouwiki to learn the basics and i'm starting off by playing perfect cherry blossom. i have some questions that i didn't see addressed in the wiki, though:

- shooting: do i just hold down z constantly, or should i do it in short spurts? in all the videos i've seen of people playing on advanced levels, they generally just hold it down the entire time, but i don't know if the gameplay on easy/medium requires that.

- character choice: who are, generally, the best characters to start off with? medium speed, medium amount of bombs?

- hitbox: when you started off, did you hold down shift so you could get a feel for the actual size of your character?

any other opinions/tips/personal experience would be great, thanks~ :3

Instead of asking us retarded questions, why don't you go play the fucking games, you dumb sack of shit. Start with Reimu, pick needles, and repeatedly play until you are good. That's all you need to know.

>> No.6941735

Just hold it down. Laser Marisa. Real men play EoSD first so they know where their hitbox is at all times.

I was going to help you until I saw you using ":3". Now you need to fuck off.

Though that could use less acid, its pretty much correct.

Reimu with the homing type is generally a good starter, obviously. Using shift doesnt just allow you to see your hitbox, it allows more precise slower movement while maneuvering through tighter patterns.

For me it was generally the first 3 stages I just dodge through, after that I start trying to memorize patterns

>> No.6941752

-You can just hold Shoot, none of that mashing faggotry
-Start with Reimu and her easy-mode homing shots. Learn the spell card patterns. Move on to Marisa to learn how to maneuver through bullets.
-Eventually you will learn to know where your girl is without looking at her after tapping movement buttons. Remember that the bullets often have small hitboxes, too

The most important thing to learn in Touhou is which bullets are randomly shot, which ones are shot along a pattern, and which ones are aimed at you. Learn to manipulated the aimed shots by moving to the corners, then slowly moving back. There are times when you want to hold still, times when you want to nudge yourself over a little bit, and times when you need to jump to the other side of the screen

i figured it would be easier to know for sure where the hitbox was than just have to guess, but starting off with eosd makes more sense just for the storyline, i guess. thanks for the advice :)

I'm sorry, but we can't tolerate emoticons and tilde shit here except in the idol threads apparently.

Play whichever girl you like the best OP.
I started with Marisa and have stuck with her for a very long time.

You will pick up on the nuances of the game over time, just keep playing. Also, do not play on Easy. Start on normal or higher. Easy spellcards are not magnificent nor beautiful.

i pretty much expected every post to be like that since everyone here is probably sick of people new to touhou treating /jp/ like a faq. thanks for giving me actual advice :)

Then why the fuck you keep contributing to that shit thinking this is a FAQ for Touhou? There is not even much to talk about what you are asking for god sake, that's something you learn alone. And stop using emoticons jesus christ.

/jp/ is dead.
This thread arrived too late to kill it, but it used the chance to violate its corpse.

>> No.6941834

Holding down Z is a pretty idea if you're scoring.

If you're not playing with Marisa, you're not playing at all.

It doesn't take any time at all to get a feel for your character's hitbox. Understanding each bullet's hitbox takes a little longer though.

But you should only be looking close to your character when the bullets are dense anyway. When it comes to faster, less dense patterns you'll be relying on peripheral vision.

Sage does nothing.
Stop using emoticons.
Here, have some stealth sage.
Stop reacting like that, you are generating shit on the board.
Keep your head down when you are an outisder, don't fight regulars.
>- hitbox: when you started off, did you hold down shift so you could get a feel for the actual size of your character?
That question is really stupid. Don't think that's something worth of "it's a specific question, so it's okay". That's like asking "when you started to walk, did you give small steps or tried big steps?"

>> No.6941885

>>6941850
someone's using emoticons and doesn't use capital letters they are obviously trolling sage this thread

if people are bound to dump their knowledge about touhou somewhere, why not in one thread where it's beneficial to someone?

you spending 6 hours a day on /jp/ and being a regular doesn't take away from the fact that you're a douchebag who apparently thinks anyone who uses smiley faces and ignores the shift key on the internet is a troll

How do I push button? Do you move your head when the character moves? How do I block? How do I hold button? How do I press other button? How do I score? How do I get life? How do I get bomb? How do I dodge bullet? Does it take time to play something nicely? If I practice will I become better?

Useless questions like that? No. If you want to talk about touhou gameplay then tall about specific spell cards and tips to avoid certain bullets for example.

Just play the games. You will learn what needs to be learned in time.

>> No.6941988

homing reimu lets you focus on learning to dodge bullets.
everything but IN teaches you to deathbomb properly.
not holding down the shoot button generally can only help for score, but there are some levels in IN where it's important to time your kills to destroy bullets (holy shit was i surprised at what happened in a touhou challenge thread when we were doing level 3 IN pacifist mode), and there are a few boss patterns in SA where you need to be careful about when and where you're shooting.
