It's been a long time since we had a discussion about this.
/jp/, have you read your SICP today?

I have entertained the notion of learning some programming someday before, however I have no previous experience outside of what little I remember from high school IT classes. Would a book such as SICP would be a correct choice for a beginner like myself?

http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/full-text/book/book.html
Full textbook available online for those interested in learning about the subject. It is a tough book for beginners if you do not have a very solid math foundation, but I'm sure the power of autism can get you through. It was in introductory course at MIT until just recently. The book has earned the status of a classic.

http://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/classes/6.001/abelson-sussman-lectures/

Video lectures to go along with the book.
Lectures are very entertaining to watch, and also contain some explanations not found in the book.

This is a book you hold on to forever. If you get far enough in the lectures on your own, you might want to buy your own copy.

http://www.gnu.org/software/mit-scheme/
Scheme interpreter and editor to go along with it.
Available for a variety of operating systems.

This is one of the best ways to reach youkai level and enter Gensokyo. I've defeated countless adversaries with my parenthesis.

K&R is better for starting out than SICP, and it's more relevant and useful as well. Only hobbyists use Scheme. No one in the real world does. If you actually knew anything, rather than just spewing stale /prog/ ``jokes'' then you would know that.

/prog/ hates you. Please stop posting there, and stop cross-posting shit too. Touhou, NEETism, figurines, and body pillows have absolutely nothing to do with /prog/. Keep your shit here.

> K&R is better for starting out than SICP, and it's more relevant and useful as well.
SICP is better for starting out than K&R, but it doesn't mean you have to use Scheme in real world and/or never learn C/read K&R. I always recommend to read SICP, learn the basics of Lisp (Scheme), master C and use it. (usually wrapped in a )
> Only hobbyists use Scheme. No one in the real world does.
Read above.

It should be noted that I'm one of the few ``quality'' posters that haven't (yet) left /prog/ to die alone. I'm a /prog/ regular, I came here from that thread.

C is a terrible choice. What a new programmer needs is a foundation, a way to think about what he is creating. K&R just screams "Make me a code monkey~!"

Scheme is only "outdated" in that it was replaced to cater to the "I wont ever use this in a job" crowd.

Any programmer worth his salt should learn, and understand basic concepts that have been lost in new courses taught in institutions all across the world. Data structures, Information Architecture, Systems Thinking, How to judge code quality based on merits – like ease to produce, maintain, understand, performance, etc

C is redundant in this day anyways. C++ is essentially a patched up C.

I though sage was so used in /prog/ because every thread consisted of spamming either: Xarn, The Sussman, SICP, ED rambling variations and so on.

C++ is essentially a shitted up C. C might not be perfect, but C++ tries to ``fix'' it by adding more shit on top of it, maintaining a sort-of-but-not-really-working compatibility layer to C. Templates are a Turing-tarpit, you'll end using them just for overloading functions, the stl is all fucked up.

Learn Scheme and the basics, use C and wait for the rise of Lisp.

Somewhere between 2006 and 2007:
2005: I wasn't there.
2006: ``good''
2007/2008: shit, but with wonderful Lisp threads (sparse, somewhere, forgotten)
2009: good but FrozenVoid.
2010: no FrozenVoid, better than 2009.
2011: maybe not[/spoler].

We can't really have a decent /prog/ challenge now, though.
