Indeed, there are quite a few on /jp/, and I can be quite an asshole myself when dealing with other ones. I must say though, I find it quite hilarious that you expect everyone to bend over backwards when someone is a dick around here, while making such claims as "/jp/ is full of assholes".

But this is pointless, so I'm done.

>Because it was pretty and had an awesome concept for an amateaur team.
The controls were clunky and the gameplay was repetitive/uninspired. Castlevania in general wasn't a good franchise. Castlevania was only successful because it was one of the first action platformers of its time. In retrospect, I don't know why there weren't more games like it; Castlevania games are trivial to code. Symphony of the Night, on the other hand is a completely different story. It is a game that is worthy of praise because it borrowed heavily from the Metroid franchise (and in many ways perfected it). The problem with Touhouvania 1 & 2 is that they marketed them as if they were Symphony of the Night era Castlevanias. They weren't. I wanted exploration, items, and abilities. Instead I got: side-scrolling and brain dead button mashing. We should make a true Touhouvania game.

Which Castlevania? If you mean SotN then, no. SotN had a god tier map, several abilities used for exploring and lots of hidden items. It in many ways advanced the Metroid formula. And this is coming from a Cave Story fanboy.

I don't think people hate Touhouvania, but they certainly aren't praising it. Aside from its graphics, music and voice acting there's nothing remarkable about it. Linear castlevania was superior. The metroidvania games are boring as hell, pointlessly drawn out with no challenge whatsoever. But unfortunately for the casuals here, the next touhouvania will most likely be linear as well. Linear = costs less to create = more profit. The touhou fanbase actually buying these games expect a challenge as well.

>> No.6898363

>>6897086
>Sorry, I forgot that people nowadays can't play anything beyond jrpg tier diffculty.
Difficulty has nothing to do with the sells of games. Certain genres just aren't selling these days because they're too primitive. When people go to purchase games they want complex designs and high production value.

>>6897089
>Unfortunately. Today's Castlevania has turned for the worse, only attracting children and people late in the series.
You haven't ever read anything about why that is the case have you? Long story short, after the next generation consoles started to come out Konami made the decision not to try to compete with 3D games. The DS for obvious reasons would become the next platform for the 2D Castlevanias. They created a few (decent) Castlevania games for their new platform but they didn't sell much, so they decided to make it more marketable to the DS's audience by making it more cartoonish. It was a successful endeavor. The gameplay itself didn't change much. As a matter of fact, according to the critiques the only Castlevanas so far that are on par with SotN have been the Castlevanias released on the handhelds, not your Retrovanias.

>> No.6898365

so when are they making big bang beat 2

>> No.6898397

There are so many dumb and untruthful opinions in this thread.

Touhouvania 2 was great, especially compared to 1 in the visuals/music department. Banpai Akira for the artwork to give a great feel, and seiyuus from well-known anime. The gameplay wasn't on par with some of the better oldschool castlevanias, and the devs should've taken note of that.

The old school castlevanias aren't hard sidescrollers, contrary to what the SOTN haters say. In fact, the time investment in one of these sidescrollers is much shorter than the metroidvanias because of the shorter nature of the games. It will take you less time to finish them.

Also, every metroidvania since SOTN added something new to the series. Yes, the art direction was crappy but Order Of Ecclesia was the first acceptable castlevania with alternative artstyle.

>> No.6898400

>>6897089
>Linearity was much more superior. If you disagree, you have not played super castlevnia IV or chronicles.
Sorry but the critiques disagree with you. When SotN came out it was almost universally dubbed the best Castlevania. Games that utilize the Metroidvania formula just happen to be some of the highest rated games of all time. Zelda's aggregate score makes it the highest rated game of all time and Metroid I think is 6th.

>>6897130
>Neither is your "hurr durr nobody cares for linearity now days, grow up you has-been" comments. But it's obvious you and I have different tastes in games, so why bother complaining.
You are a has-been. Our taste in games have nothing to do with this. I'm just explaining why the Castlevania team went in this direction. Classicvanias stopped selling a decade ago. A reoccurring complaint of the handheld games is that they weren't SotN-enough.

In the case of Sonic and the Mega Man series, the problem can be traced to the developers forgetting their roots. That is not the case with Castlevania. Symphony of the Night was a reinvention of the franchise that received universal acclaim. It didn't just borrow elements from the Metroid series, it took the Metroid formula to another level--hence the term Metroidvania. All Castlevanias that followed SotN attempted to emulate its success. SotN came at a time when the 'classicvanias' were dying. Had it not been for SotN the franchise would have died by the late 90s. Only a vocal minority prefer the linear Castlevanias. They're not even big enough to be considered a niche market.
