Yahoo!jp and eBay are mixed bags, Hobbysearch and HLJ are the best bets in the 1/6 doll categories. If you're proficient in Moon you can buy from Azone international via proxy (registration form seems international unfriendly and certain elements of the form only accommodate Japanese counties and mailing codes)

Sorry about that, I forgot a lot of those pictures had dolls with small round irises, which yes, are creepy and don't work well for moe-cuteness. Glad there were 1/6 ones in there too

>I don't understand why people buy the big, expensive, weird-looking dolls instead of the cute small ones. Is it for status?

Not all the big ones are weird looking I don't think, maybe a more traditional resin BJD which many agree are not everyone's cup of tea.

As for status? No, it shouldn't be but if you look at other sites or forums they certainly parade their purchases around as if status is important.

I will say I enjoy my dolls on a regular basis. Especially one in particuar more than the others, and to prove it I can say I've broken the inner frame in three places

>I think unless you have something special to show in your pictures... like a new outfit or a cute pose/situation/cute custom... people aint gonna be interested.

Buying new things all the time is expensive, and is a rabid sign of circlejerking that plagues figure threads and a couple "other" doll-related sites. Not my cup of tea.

Plus, a majority of my snaps have a degree of interaction and thought put into them as opposed to a doll doing absolutely nothing.

>And you need to be a very good photographer with all the right lighting equipment and all that jazz. Blog pros usually are the above as well.

My pictures may be marginal, but are far being from atrocious phonesnaps or whitewashed point-and-shoot disasters. Without buying backdrops and doubling my electric bill for added lighting, I think these pictures are damn good for the conditions I restrict myself to.

I work at home and am tied to the phone constantly so I'm just snapping away while on calls. So a professional shoot out in public is out of the question.

My goal is to share what hasn't been shared. minimal understanding of moon and the ability to click a link will take anyone to any number of the same blogs.

I'm not into the things in this thread, but I saw your comment and wanted to post because I'm losing motivation because the entire Western hemisphere depresses me when it comes to hobby-related content that isn't mainstream. The level which an individual can reach is tied to his community's quality; the community that interacts the best/most is the best. But Westerners can't even be bothered to read half the time when it comes to hobbies. Or that's my experience.

And although you say that, I have to wonder why you don't just buy whatever it is you say you don't have if you feel that way about half-assing things. You must have your financial reasons. Sometimes I wonder if the reason their hobbyists are better than ours isn't because they have a lot of people not under economic stress(I don't know the validity of this statement).

Some of us grew up with dads or older brothers that built model trainsets or flew model airplanes and know exactly how you feel. The modern geek is all about instant gratification. You can get anything at the click of a button. You can download entire operating systems play online for hours on end without spending a dime. It's way different today.

>But Westerners can't even be bothered to read half the time when it comes to hobbies. Or that's my experience.
The traditional definition of hobbyist is dead. Not just in the west, but everywhere. If you roll back the clock for just a half a decade and went to WF, would you find doujin games, prepainted figures and figma? HELL NO that scene used to be *dominated* by garage kits and gunpla both in the form of kitbash and scratch. But it's "too hard" for your average shut-in, that's why video games and premade statues dominate what used to be a hobbyist market. I've already concluded that the hobbyist is a dying breed and I'm a dying descendant.

>I have to wonder why you don't just buy whatever it is you say you don't have if you feel that way about half-assing things.
It's a mixture: financial limits and level of devotion and time. I never aim to be a photog. it's about sharing, like the previous anon said >>6907469 it's about seeing another person's stuff. There are way better pictures on flickr if that is the quality you desire.

DD2 is sold out in Japan and the US currently, or at least last I checked, and Volks isn't sure when they'll be back in stock. I figure it shouldn't be too long though... I hope.

I'm getting an 03 and painting it myself because I'm not retarded. I have painted many, many resin BJDs so it might take some practice but I imagine I can transfer the skill over.

But now I really want a DDS and I'm torn between instant gratification (DD2) for my birthday (which is a depressing day, isn't it?) and waiting for a more awesome body. (DDS)

I'm a pretty small person (4'11"), and so I have problems sometime handling the 60cm body... so it'd be nice to handle a 50cm.

My biggest problem with getting said doll is trying to find a wig. I want a more natural red wig, that's not too orange and not too burgandy/wine colored. Something similar to OP's color, with bangs and length to it. Right now I'm looking at this one, but it's not entirely what I was looking for. I dunno! Leeke seems to have cut their color options down pretty dramatically, and the other sites I'd think to go to aren't delivering what I wanted.

Didn't know that, lolz. I don't follow the limiteds. They're never from anime I like. I'm getting an 03 head, and i'm not going to call her '03'. I have a love/hate relationship with sailor collars. How does your volks uniform go on? Over the head, fasten in back? I made my one doll a cute sailor top, and finished sewing it and realized there wasn't enough clearance to get it on. It sucked.

>> No.6915155

I (really) like Airi from Queen's Blade, so I had every intention of naming her thusly. If I assembled a doll from normal parts, I probably would have named her differently (unless I specifically wanted her to look like Airi, anyway).

The Lucky Star uniform top fastens in the back and underneath one side of the collar. This makes it much easier to put on.

The one small advantage vinyl inner-frame dolls have over elastic-strung BJDs is that you can remove the head arms etc which open up options for complicated dressing. For example, with the collar you made you can remove the head dress your doll and re-attach the head afterward. The same goes for jackets, or some tighter-fitting shirts, simply remove the hands and arms, insert the arms to the jacket, then re-attach the arms to the body with the jacket strung between them. I have a DD Mari and her schoolgirl shirt is fit very closely around the upper arms. (pic related)

tl;dr, Rather than trying to dress her whole, detaching the arms and 'pre-inserting" them into the shirt makes a world of difference.

>I imagine /toy/ would think I'm crazy, but I like naming my dolls
Since dolls are meant to evoke a personality, naming dolls is totally normal behavior.

>> No.6917281

>> No.6917296

Now that I think about it, you could probably pull the head, hold the elastic in place with an S-hook, dress the doll and reattach the head once the collar is around the neck. I'm just guessing though since i don't have a traditionally strung BJD

>> No.6917817

>>6916760

pft, the one small advantage? inner skeletal dolls pose a lot easier and are generally sturdier than strung dolls.

I actually hadn't thought of that- my problem was mostly with fitting it over the doll's head without disrupting the sailor collar. I owned a DD2 body, but she had a resin head at the time, and it was awful to remove her head. Same with my tiny I have now. How is head removal, more or less? I heard it could be a little... forceful.

>>6917296

my tiny is strung with two strings at once, means it's fucking hard to get the two knots into her neck. a herpaderp my stringing I know.

>>6917281

It's not really a science. I mean, I've always made a brief idea, and then looked on a baby name site or come up with one at random. my first doll was actually named after the letters on a license plate that went by when I was justifying the purchase to my mother (Ayu, Ayumu) -Others have been found in a baby name site or randomly pop in mind.

>> No.6917932

>>6917817
I guess all dolls have their merits and drawbacks. I pondered getting a first gen DD body but passed them up numerous times because I don't need more dolls - heck, 3 is two more than I need. I just wanted to see how differently naturally falling limbs look like but am not willing to spend just to see it in action.

Merits? I guess there are more advantages than one. and no need to restring for different feet and hands I suppose. I'm still irked by that whole staining thing and the fact that the inner frame, while sturdy, isn't indestructible and some more aggressive poses can stress it enough to break since it's hidden under what is essentially a loose vinyl casing. You really can't tell if you're flexing a tight joint, forcing some vinyl to give way or in danger of breaking a part until it's too late. I've snapped a shin in half (repaired with epoxy and wire,) a torso joint (epoxy, screws and zip ties,) and the receiving end of the joint is also showing evidence of distressed plastic. So take the sturdiness for what it's worth.

>How is head removal, more or less? I heard it could be a little... forceful.
The neck is a ribbed piece of plastic that enters a whole in the bottom of the head recess.
It pulls off without too much of a struggle. Removing the wig allows for a decent grip as well as firmly holding the neck beneath. Alternately, you can remove the wig and cap, and push on the peg from the inside.

I have two dolls right now I can't do anything with because they are so damn impossible to work with. Pic related, she was my dream doll- Volks retired F08 who showed up for $100. I pushed buy so fast you have no idea. She spent about six months on a Dollfie Dream body, which was gorgeous and perfect. Then I snapped the leg somehow and Volks replaced it free of charge. I resold the body for $20 less than I bought it and decided since she was a resin doll, she should have a resin body. I bought one in the $200 range.

Worst idea ever. It poses like shit. Her arms have two positions, L and I. They're not very pretty, either.

I have a Domuya flexibody boy too, and I like, but I have no idea what to do with him. He has no faceup, no wig, no eyes. His body is so fickle. I should have sold him and my F08's body, but I don't have paypal or ebay and it would be a pain in the ass.

Also this. 1/6 scale dolls won't ever have the drapery and realism in clothing as the larger counterparts. The smaller in scale you go, the much finer and much more expensive a fabric you need if you want it to drape well. Even then, I'm sure the fabric required isn't easy to get a hold of... because certainly Azone aren't using it.

Congrats, and welcome. If you buy a DD with a head, the eyes are already in there. You could replace them of course. If you dont want to worry about cutting or styling hair, just buy a wig you like. As far as I know, relatively few people modify their dolls to that extent.

Just buy a face that you like. Everything else is essentially swappable.

When I got into them 2 years ago, the only resources out there was google and a extremely finite number of blogs. Even then, the information was very general and so far hasn't really applied to me.

Hair - Cutting the hair is no different from smaller dolls or anything with hair on their head. trim as desired. But like the other poster says, you can easily get a wig you like. If flecks of dust plague the wig, a plain gentle shampoo such as baby shampoo can do the trick. avoid using human styling aids like hair dryers or curling irons since most doll hair is essentially, plastic.
Eyes - if you get a made-up doll from Volks, the eyes are fastened in by glue which is easily removed. A lot of people who change the eyes like to use a more temporary fixative such as poster tack.
Care - apart from common sense, vinyl doll care applies to Dollfie Dream in general: dyes from non-colorfast fabrics (in my experience, dyed synthetics) will be absorbed into vinyl. Avoid long term storage with dark components including wigs.

Otherwise they're quite durable.

>> No.6923303

>>6923204

Yeah don't cut the wig. You're better off just buying one in the style you like. I know Dannychoo posted a picture of taking his 'daughter' to get his hair cut but I have no idea why. He's a weirdo anyway.

Denofangels.com is a general doll site that'll tell you a lot. You should probably figure out what kind of doll you want. The limiteds are more expensive, if yo just want a basic take a look at volksusa.com. (Or if you're not in the US, volks.co.jp)

All good advice. When I got my girl, I had a very hard time getting her head cap on. I ended up cutting triangles out of the inside rim (like Volks suggests on their blog), but it was still very difficult. I have no idea how I'm going to get it off if I ever want to swap her eyes.

Wigs are easy once you've done it a few times. Put in on her head, hold it in the front, and pull down in the back. You'll get the hang of it in a couple of tries. I have a little fabric stocking underneath to help avoid stains. That made the wig more difficult to get on, however it doesn't slide around anymore.

I'm still paranoid about breaking my girl's body, so I haven't done any difficult poses. I'm scared to change her hands too. I broke a Pureneemo XS wrist changing hands. The hand part broke off the peg part that fits inside the forearm. Thankfully I still had the old Obitsu body.

You shouldn't have any problem with getting off the hands, the hand doesn't come off the joint. It's just a soft plastic sleeve over a plastic piece. You should be able to just loose it off the piece. Hold the wrist joint in one hand and tug on the hand with the other.

But these threads keep popping up and azone keeps releasing new stuff. Now I'm thinking of trying to get an azone 50 cm doll which looks easier to make clothes and accessories for. I'm not too sure how larger and smaller dolls compare though.

Is that a forced choice anon? The reason why azns are less ashamed of their waifu collections than in the west is because parents like it when their son shows an interest in girls-having a son with 200 pictures of hatsune miku his bedroom, to the parents, just means he's got women on his mind and will likely end up producing grandchildren once his life reaches that point lol where he starts socializing with women openly and dating.

I noticed you're set at ISO400 at an aperture of > F6

ISO400:
for the amount of light you seem to have you can use a lower ISO speed like 200, possibly even 100 to get some richer color.

Aperture > F6 :
since you're shooting a small focal area against a backdrop instead of against scenery, widening the aperture can't hurt to allow more light to a lower ISO

>>6979808
>I also need to properly diffuse the light. I think it was a bit too strong
Having plenty of light to work with is a good thing!
See above on using lower ISO values, ISO400 is good for room lighting but since your subject is well lit (plenty of diffused white light with no hard shadows) you can open up the camera more.

I'm reading that aperture is used to control the depth of field, so that's one way it matters.

If your camera is a Canon, you should have an Aperture priority setting (Av) which once selected will allow you to select your aperture with the dial near the shutter. Based on your light and ISO settings your shutter speed will change automatically.

When taking pictures against a backdrop depth of field is not as important as in a frame with objects of varying distance.

attached is an example of a wide aperture versus narrow aperture (F 1.4 on the left F9 on the right respectively) I find F4-F5 to be generally safe for items the size of dolls with no particular focus on backdrop.

When it comes to the pictures found on Azure Toy Box, like >>6977253,
extremely narrow apertures are required to keep items at distances of 5 feet as well as 50 feet in focus.

>>6981610 I can get to 3.5, which requires me to be very close to the object, causing distortion like >>6977253
that's actually a wide-angle lens that's causing the bending in that picture. a wide aperture will only cause objects out of the focal area to be blurry

Thanks, again. This is helping me understand it all much better.

I think I'll soon try and get flection bodies and stands for all my pureneemo dolls, so it's easier to take good pictures. With these old bodies you can barely pose them, and most of my time is spent just trying to get them to not fall over.
I also see that you can get some kind of oil for their hair. Has anyone tried using that?

Oh, and has anyone noticed how long the thread has been alive? (゚д゚ )

opening the aperture to a lower fstop gives shallower depth of field, but also increases the amount of light coming into the camera, allowing iso or shutter speed to be lower. its good for low light pictures so you can take them handheld or without a tripod since shutter speed 1/60 and a little bit of IS will prevent blurry photos. problem is, the shallow depth of field isnt always something you want, and a lot of lenses take their best photos a few stops down instead of fully open.

this is taken at f1.8 and 1/60 handheld and you can see the shallow dof. luckily I have a fast and sharp lens, but I do suck at photography.

Okay, let's see how this goes.

I've uploaded six packs of 500 images each. Each is approx 100 MB. Post which pack(s) you're downloading. When done, just upload the remaining pics and post here again.

I'll quickly summarize what needs to be done:
Most importantly, all images that are not of dolls should be removed.
Images with a very low resolution, or with noticeable artifacts should go too.
Images may also be sorted in folders, by brand or size. Any sorting is better than none.
If you can do any of this, your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Alright then, I'll just take the first one so we'll have the first and last taken.

Also image limit reminder. And a tip. Might want to add the archives to the OP pasta of the next thread followed by what they're about, instructions on what to do with them, and also what was already taken.

There was some 3dpd in archive six. I felt a little betrayed, Kordox. ;_;

Also are we removing images of the male dolls? There's this strange action figure that keeps showing up... I may just put him in his own folder and let you do what you want.

Sure, if you're in doubt then just put it aside. But if it's an actual action figure, then it should go too.

Again, thank you guys!

Hey Kordox, does a shitty paintbrush censor in paint classify as a noticeable artifact?

And if I'm on the subject, are nudes/decently censored nudes okay?

Hm.. probably keep it, just to be safe.

Nudes are fine (●´ω`●)

But then again, if it's a really bad picture, then just remove it.

No one in the archive?

Here's few sorted ones:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19373621/doll-4.zip

I put all the dolls I didn't recognize in the others-folder. I wasn't too sure of all of the dollfies either so you might skim them through.
Also, the second zip is in the middle of uploading but it should work shortly.

Welp, since I can't help with the actual sorting, mine's done. Pretty straight forward though, with not that many removed really, and whatever I took out I left in another folder so you can be sure I didn't fuck anything up. That paint censor's also in there.

Oh and one last thing. Whatever seems too good to be there, is most likely a duplicate I managed to track down.

In any case, upload just finished. Would've posted earlier, but due to the board issues barely putting it up now.

Not sure if I should bother with the third which seems to be the last one, since this anon >>7007809 seems to sort them as well...
