any recommended ps2-only stuff besides Akaiito, Amagami and Kimikiss? Most of the stuff on vndb looks like it's just otome/yaoi games

Those.
Also, Mushihime-sama, Atelier Iris, all NIS games and Arcana Heart.
If you like Japanese stuff besides generic /jp/ and /a/ stuff I'd also reccomend Onimusha series, Final Fantasy gamse, Shin Megami Tensei games, Metal Slug Anthology, Tekken series, Dead or Alive 2, Capcom vs Snk 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Wild Arms series, Drakengard, Shining Force, Dawn of Mana, GrimGrimoire, Steambot Chronicles, Arc the Lad series, Neogeo Battle Coliseum, .hack// and .hack//GU games, Okami, Art of Fighting Anthology, Samurai Showdown Anthology, Shinobi, Nightshade, Devil May Cry series, Shadow Hearts series, Suikoden series, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, Grandia games, Rogue Galaxy, Metal Saga, Dark Cloud 1 and 2, Valkyrie Profile 2, Star Ocean 3, Zone of the Enders, The Bouncer, Rygar: The Legendary Adventure, Gungrave and it's sequel, Armored Core games, Red Ninja: End of Honor, Tenchu games and Shinobido, Kingdom hearts games, The Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigino Dungeon, Magna Carta..

I'm probably gonna get flamed for not having a /jp/ish taste even tho all (not sure 'bout red ninja) are Japanese :P

Both it and its prequel (Akaiito) are great. If you're good with folklore and can catch the obscure references casually thrown around in every other scene, you'll enjoy it a lot. The research done is impressive, every one of those little tidbits regarding local mythology has a sound base in real folklore. Not many VNs mention Omononushi and the red arrow story (where 'Nushi turns himself into an arrow and hurls himself up princess Seyadatara's vagina while she was taking a shit. Since this is clearly nothing unusual, Seyadatarahime takes the arrow home, whereupon 'Nushi turns back into a handsome man and marries her. I guess this is how Cupid works in Japan.) or Echinococcus (an invasive tapeworm that can make football-sized cysts around the body, breach of any such cyst is fatal.) There's even a flashback to the Battle of Dan no Ura (Not sure, might've been the Battle of Bunei too. Been a while since I read Aoishiro.)

The prequel loves to kick you in the balls every once in a while though, especially in Tsudzura's route. Obana ;_; Yumei is nonetheless my favorite heroine in any VN.

The fact that no one has even mentioned the Yakuza series just fills me with a deep level of shame. It is literally the most Japanese game ever brought to the US and no one mentions it, it's basically the spiritual successor to Shenmue, another great game, and no one has mentioned it.

Alright, so here's the story:
You are Ryu Kazuma low level enforcer for the Yakuza (or Japanese Mob if you suck); you are also alpha as fuck. Seriously, you are so awesome that men fear you and women want to have sex with you!

You're like a lesbian without the hypocrisy bullshit!

So what do you do next?
Well that's entirely up to you!
You want to prove you're the baddest motherfucker around you can go around busting heads for pocket change.

You want to make that Casanova fellow look like an insecure neet who couldn't get his his peepee touched if he were a chocolate-covered millionaire with a fistful of new shoes? Go ahead, prepare to romance the finest cabaret club women you can find!

You want to do absolutely nothing but dick around with UFO catchers, mahjong and pachinko?
Do it! The world is your oyster!

The game is so open ended that there's no guarantee that you'll ever play the same way twice. Plus it takes place in *NOT* Tokyo and several other *NOT* districts. (The *not* is for legal reasons). I mean... dang it all, even Japanese gangsters like this game!

There are only two slight blights to the game:

1. The first game "Yakuza " features an all English voice cast featuring Michael Marsden, who literally sleeps and growls his way through the game. (The second one is completely in Japanese with a decent, if rushed translation job for all the text)

2. The 3rd game, for the US edition, they pretty much removed all the open-endedness so it plays like a straight boring beat-em-up for it's entirety. But it's on the PS3 so it doesn't really take anything away from the PS2 editions

FFXIII is better, but FFX-2 is easily second place. Unfortunately, this is helped by the fact that FF games have terrible combat in genera.
