Ar Tonelico For Lazy People Pack™:

Contains torrents for the games along with the emulator installer and bios. Now updated with the latest PCsx2 SVN beta client, plugins are automatically included. Thanks to Anonymous for this.

And before someone asks again for the lossless albums:

AT - All: http://www.hongfire.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=116396&d=1240137696
AT2 - All: http://www.hongfire.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=108204&d=1232984269
AT3 - OST: http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=download&tid=112183
AT3 - Hymmnos albums: http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=download&tid=111040

Thanks to Yuyucow and Anonymous in previous threads for digging up the links. Foobar can play the .tta files but if you feel like converting them to .FLAC or whatever for your MP3 player/Media player of choice then Foobar also provides an easy convert tool. Takes about a minute to convert the albums over to FLAC.

In recent times, NIS America has taken more of a Working Designs-type of approach to localization, taking liberties with the way certain lines and memes and pop-culture references are expressed. There are fans, however, that would prefer a more strict “translation” as opposed to “localization.” Are you trying to appease both parties?
Really? Well, I suppose I can admit I went a bit crazy and had fun with Trinity Universe, but you can safely use that as the wildest we’ll probably ever get. Atelier Rorona, conversely, was kept mostly literal. I think we’re appeasing both parties, and if you refer to my ZHP Developer’s Blog post, you’ll read about why sometimes I stray from the script. It’s all for the sake of creating unique, flavorful characters with distinct personalities.

>In one cutscene, male characters encourage a woman to strip (e.g., "Uh . . . do I have to take off even more clothes…?" and "Quit teasing us and do it already!"); another sequence depicts a male character "removing" a magical crystal from a female character—this scene is accompanied by suggestive moans and comments (e.g., "Aoto’s putting his hand inside Soma" and "Fumble around every inch inside of her . . . you will find what you’re looking for . . . !"). >Everything about Luca seems forced
I know how it could not appeal to everyone but... that was kinda the entire point of the character. She's a bitter, horrible girl who forces herself to be all nice and smiles and flashy clothes because she knows that's how the world goes around.
It's an archetype much closer to reality as far as "grittiness" goes than say, tsundere or moeblob, so that's why probably some people have difficulty to digest her.
I like her the least out of the AT2 heroines, but still I thought she was a pretty well-written character for a saga that tries to be about psychologically disturbed people. The only reason I didn't find her that attractive is because she reminds me of myself, and I don't like that in my vidya waifus.

>> No.6856654

>>6856308
The defining traits of someone that is "Tsundere" is still pretty broad through.
How can it not go from completely unrealistic, all the way to completely realistic?
It's not as if it archtype in itself requires a major change in a character.
And what's a moeblob is subjective and up for discussion, although the universal truth of the blob factor would be that it's somehow many things at the same time.

Luca is also what has been come to known as Dorodere. .

Atelier Totori's gameplay cycle flows much, much better than Rorona's. You'll rarely, if ever, find yourself micromanaging your time so efficiently you don't get anything done. (I found that really ironic when I played Rorona.) The interface is just also a lot more streamlined, so it's less of a hassle to do things.

On the story side of things, there is a real plot with some pretty emotional moments, but there are large swaths of the game where events are all comedic and character-driven. That's not bad though, as the characters (even Rorona) are a lot more interesting than the cast of Rorona. I found the humor in Totori to be a couple notches above Rorona.

And did I mention how much better the graphics look? You should play this game if for no other reason than to see Kishida Mel's artwork rendered into intricate 3D.

No. If you do the AKHI-dan will come to your house, strip you down to your underwear, and make you parade around outside with a Nyamo mask. Well. Yes, you CAN since the plot stands enough on its own, but it also ties into the other games, so it will be more delicious if you've played them. Aside from things like "Oh, yeah, I remember when this character left to come here", there's the usual series in jokes - e.g. the candies with the Fu Manchu getup will actually have...... some context to them.

Ideally, play them in order... mainly because certain things in AT2 are nicer if you've gotten the true AT1 end, but AT1's battle system is fairly boring compared to AT2's.

Only now just picked up Rorona and accidentally spent all day playing it. Oh god, Cordelia and Astrid. If Totori is EVEN BETTER I can't wait for it to come out.

Really, the main argument for playing the first two first is the fact that the games progressively get better, and once you play AT3 you wouldn't have the reason or drive to go back and finish the first two, therefore you would miss out on a whole ton of hilarious hijinks, great characters, and amazing music.

The first two games are definitely worth playing, so you should definitely play them first.

Conserve your time. For the most part, pure quantity of items is what you need, and variety isn't always a good thing (check the actual request for specific requirements)
As an example, making Cannons takes a huge investment in materials and time and is pointless when you can say, make bombs instead.

When you unlock the ability to have the various NPCs sell stuff you make, abuse it like crazy in getting them to sell the stuff you need to fill requests. If you want any of the decent endings, you will be running around like a nutcase filling in general and character requests.

Also, be very very VERY careful of some of the requests. Some of them are traps in that it's nigh impossible to meet the specific requirements, such as 60+ quality honey.

Also, with some of the general requests, if it sounds ludicrously easy and has a stupidly high reward, it probably is too good to be true. Those are Cordelia's requests and are needed for her ending. You will lose fame by doing those.

Control your urge to be a perfectionist. It's not necessary to get a perfect 10 stars for the missions. 8 is more than enough to unlock even the highest requirement ending.

When you get Hom, it's generally best to use him/her as a gather mule until they've skilled up. Even if you can't use the stuff they gather or they're crap in quality, you can still sell 'em for some extra cash.

Oh yes, not sure if it applies for the male Hom, there's an event where Rorona finds out why Astrid has been pestering her to call her 'oneesama'

I notice there are 3 separate columns for stars, the big yellow stars (overall performance?) is what you're referring to right? Because there's also quality of turn ins and another one I can't think of right now.

Also another question, is 100 the maximum amount of trust/friendship levels? It seems like the stats go up really easily because I'm already at 25 trust for the castle requests.

Please don't laugh at me for asking this, as I am entirely new to this scene and only recently bought a PS3, but out of all the Gust and NIS games, what probably has the most value for its gameplay? I was looking at AT2's gameplay, and while it looked amazing, it was mentioned that you aren't really given any freedom of advancement (i.e. no dungeon crawling or grinding). I'm aware that a lot of these are basically more like VN's than they are RPG's, but as long as the game itself is fun I don't mind that.

>> No.6900361

>>6900246
I can't talk about 3, but the gameplay and side events from AT2 are enjoyable and bring a challenge until you start getting the right timings for the guard system, after that, it's a breeze, but it doesn't stop being enjoyable due to the setting, story, characters and the music.

If you end up enjoying the setting like most of us did, give a try to the first title. It's a pretty basic and easy RPG, but the other elements make up for it, and if you become another Jakuri fan, you'll learn more about her on the first game.

For GUST, Totorin. Mana Khemia is also pretty good if you like a bit more classically styled RPGs.
Ar Tonelico, as they say, is not really about the gameplay. Ar Tonelico II does have the best gameplay in the series though. There is some dungeon crawling (it's fairly linear though), and you can grind (it's only necessary if you don't utilize items/Dualstall/Girl Power). There are some satisfyingly challenging boss battles in the game.
AT3's battle system just wasn't as fun, although it really is as hard as hell on Hard Mode. The other aspects of the game make up for it, however.

I haven't really played any games developed by NIS though.

If you're looking to get a lot of hours for your dosh then you should give Disgaea a look. I used to spend hours in that fucking item world, trying to make my equipment better, then my save corrupted and I stopped playing.

Mana Khemia is also a fun game, the battle turn system is a bit like FFX, but better, and it has amusing characters such as Flay and Anna.

It's not GUST's fault you can't accept Mute's pure feelings!

While it's unusual that there were only two Shikata songs (and one was the OTHER instance of GUST trolling their fanbase into delicious tears of rage but was actually a really nice song, just not zOMG EPIC), AT3 has its share of great Hymmnos.

Let's see, from side blue...
* EXEC_FLIP_ARPHAGE/.: god fucking damn. Any other Shikata songs like this in the game and my head would have exploded
* EXEC_METEMPSYCHOSIS/.: what can I say, I'm a sucker for chants and digderidoos
* EXEC_EP=NOVA/.: I don't really like Saki all that much, but this is just such a fun song and also CHOU☆RON☆GU that I don't see why people hate it so much. Was ki ra kyakkya kyakkya yor en mea en kyakkya kyakkya!

I really like COSMOFLIPS and REBIRTHIA=PROTOCOL, but they just don't have quite the same oomph for some reason, which means I'll probably just grow into them.

From side Red:
* ViBaaCi mJiiRa: has Ar Ciela chants and nice instrumentation going for it. A~fe~ze~ri~a~
* chmod b111000000/n: nice, slow, menacing boss theme. And Her Highness has that nasal miko singing thing going on sometimes.
* METHOD_HYMMELI/.: I have a fever, and that fever can only be cured by more drums and Pastalie.

Z is quite passable if generic J-popish, I rather like Xaaaci on the balance (...dople. @#R) &P*U@<$*P&@#(L& YP@"U*#& YFPZ$#*> UJP>"(& UKJ"#$ P*LUJC*"#)$*(&F# U(J&G*# "). FLIP_FUSIONSPHERE is nice, but I don't usually listen to a lot of downtempo music like that these days so I'm usually distracted by the other songs.

It seems like there's an awful lot of in-game character and insert songs this time around. Also, that theme in Glow/Grow is too similar to the Dear Friends motif from Final Fantasy. Every time I hear it, I'm like "oh, I just beat Zeromu... wait."

Maybe, maybe not. I'm not >>6908363, but... I didn't have much of an opinion on my first playthrough (except at her puns). Then I started reading the Toukouspheres (more puns). Then I read more about her in the settei book, and read the light novel. Nenesha mentions to some random at some point, "Oh, don't think I'm all nice. That would cause problems for all of us." I haven't done Luca's route yet, though, but is Nenesha perhaps a bitch in later levels? That would be kind of delicious. Then I read Flash Cosmosphere Infel. The latter two really endeared her to me.

So, the impression I have of her now is something like this. She's amazingly intelligent, and while she'd much prefer to be off doing her own thing and doesn't deal with random strangers well at all, she's not *completely* socially inept. She's unfailingly logical, but is hardly a mindless robot. Nenesha is very important to her, but it's not one of those stupid "omg i cant be without you for i miniiittttteee" relationships. She feels very strongly about what's important to her - perhaps too much. After all, the reason she starts planning Sublimation is because she was so shocked by the way the people of Meta Falss turned their backs on her, resulting in the failure of their prized Metafalica plan and Nenesha's death, that she concluded that the people would never be able to open their hearts enough to attain Metafalica and decided to make a world where no-one would hurt each other anymore. But, even after all that, she was willing to let Cloche and Luca try to create Metafalica because she thought Cloche had a chance of doing it. Obviously I can't say her intentions are entirely pure due to the enormous grudge she carries, and unfortunately I can't really articulate exactly why I like her so much, but the supplemental materials really helped.

Go with whoever you like more.

Aurica is better story and dungeons wise and the shortcut doors in the Crescent Chronicle remain open, but be prepared to see her put herself down constantly. Misha has Krusche (has a healing skill + DFC) and Jack (second strongest party member) and a change in her later would be less sudden, but she doesn't have any unique dungeons (and you have to go through a long trek in the Tower) and for some reason the shortcut doors in the Crescent Chronicle remain closed.

Each path has their own major boss as well. The other boss will seemingly mysteriously disappear, but it's presumed the other group defeats them.

I would go with Aurica first because I think she has better dungeons and the story during her path seems better/more to do with the main plot. But it really comes down to which girl you like more, especially since once you choose one you won't gain access to the other for a long time and you're locked on the chosen girl's ending.

I don't get it, what particular writing style makes you guys mad? There's nothing in particular that I've noticed in anime-related pages.

The only thing that slightly annoys me is when they don't say the name of the source (name of game, show, etc.), only the character's name with the character's name linking to source, as if they expect everyone to know who that character is.

Mizuki was one of my favorite characters in the game, although she wasn't part of my "Main Team" (Kanata, Tsubaki, Recit, Miyu). It probably helps that she's voiced by Laura Bailey. (Even though the English VA aren't listed, I figured out who it was when she said "Shiny!" in battle.)

As for true end, I can't help but be disappointed. Ashura was so fucking overpowered for a story boss it ain't funny. The normal final bosses are strong, too, but nothing some standard leveling and buying some Meteorites won't fix. Standard JRPG fare there. But Ashura... goddamn. That was ridiculous. Using the Covert Shop exploit was pretty much the only way I could beat her without doing massive amount of grinding (I was 110+ when I first fought her and got destroyed, went back to her at 160~ and still got stomped) and wasting time I could have been using playing other games.

I thought I would feel better after beating her, thinking I'm in for a heartwarming end of some sort. Nope. The ending is shorter than even the normal/good ends, and there's no post-credits scene. I would have really liked to have seen how the gang is doing after that battle. How disappointing. As much as I hated Cross Edge, at least that game's true end was a little more satisfying.

I was curious about the sales numbers of Rorona so I looked them up. http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/36069/atelier-rorona-alchemist-of-arland/.. If that link is credible, that means Rorona sold more copies in North America than it did in Japan by around 20,000 copies. That's nuts.

I just started Ar Tonelico 2. Croix sounds younger than I thought he would be. All the screencaps of him showed him serious I thought he would have a deeper voice. Oh well, he sounds fine.

Had my first tutorial battle. This is where I noticed a problem. Weird black lines appearing over Croix (and Cloche in an earlier cutscene). In Ar Tonelico 1 I was able to ignore it because it was just a single black line somewhere on a character's body in battle. But here it was ALL OVER Croix's body. That's something that can't easily be ignored.

It seems if I switch over to DirectX3D Software mode instead of Hardware mode (I'm using the plugins that came with the AT Made Easy download, by the way) it gets rid of the lines. Unfortunately, it slows down the game into a crawl.

Did you try using the other graphics plugin? I'm not sure if it's included in the lazy pack but my emulator ran perfectly with the ZeroGS plugin. And if it's crawling try hit F5 and it should change your interlacing settings (unless I'm thinking of another plugin) which should increase FPS a little. Alternatively you could ask in the next thread if/when it's made since we hit 300 posts.

>> No.6945166

>>6945067

Yeah it came with ZeroGS. It DOES solve the lines problem. But it came with other problems. Such as when I load from a save state, it causes the screen to go black and glitchy looking (I save stated at the beginning of the first tutorial battle, by the way); it only returns to normal once Croix or the enemy started attacking, i.e. when it stopped explaining things. But it doesn't show the name of the attack, it's blank.

I don't know whether starting from the title screen instead of the save state would solve this problem, I didn't feel like going through that long intro again.

>> No.6945190

>>6945166

Well I never used save states so I can't really comment on that, I just used the standard save/load option present in the game and all worked fine for me.

Hm, so I guess I'll just avoid loading save states then. Not that I ever really used them much in AT1 (I used the standard in-game saves); I think I only really needed a save state for right at the end of AT1, when you choose between Aurica/Misha and Shurelia.

Almighty then. Until the black lines issue is resolved (or I learn to tolerate them) I guess I'll use ZeroGS for the time being. Thanks.

Now I switch to ZeroGS. I made a save state at the beginning of the tutorial battle so I could more easily check for a black lines fix if any.

This is how it looks when I first load it up. The text didn't even appear at first until I pressed X to advance the text.

Oh yeah, there's one other thing that ZeroGS does I forgot to mention -- for some reason if I go full screen then try to get out of full screen I'm stuck in a blank screen. The only way to get out is to Ctrl+Alt+Del and then select Task Manager. Not sure what's the deal, possibly an error I'm not seeing. Windows mode seems fine but I'd rather play in full screen.

I have some annoying issue too. The game has weird flickering now and then, the screen goes black for half a second and then it goes back to normal. While not critical it's getting on my nerves and I'd love to solve it. It doesn't seem to be related to speedhacks as it happens with them off too, must be a GSDx problem because it was gone when I tried ZeroGS (which is a huge piece of shit so that's not a real solution).

Oh brother. Got to the world map for the first time in AT2 and the bottom half of the world map is all wonky. Like the first half displays correctly, but the bottom half is the sky in the background (instead of the floating plates surrounding the tower, or the rest of the land, etc.), things like that.

I read in a few previous threads that a "Gust Fix" is supposed to fix it, but apparently it either didn't or this particular PCSX2 I have didn't come with it (it's the 0.9.7 r3878). If it messes up the world map background, it might mess up Cosmosphere backgrounds too which would be not-good.

Question on AT2:

Do main story cutscenes/dialouge change if you "confess" to a heroine in the Cosmosphere? Like, say, in the main story if you haven't confessed to anyone and aren't locked into anyone's ending, everyone speaks more neutral towards you. But if you confess to, say, Cloche, then during the main game she acts more dere to you in the dialouge.

Does that happen?

Main story segments are generally geared towards whichever route you pick (Luca/Cloche) but that doesn't really make much of an effect. If you go past level 5 (I think?) for a girl then you'll get night time events with the other girls making comments and feeling generally distant however the story stays neutral... Or at least this is how I believe it worked since I didn't dive past level 5 until just before the last boss.

>> No.6946582,17 [INTERNAL]

>>6946582,16

I see. Great, now I'm even more tempted to go pass Level 5 early in the game. If I don't go pass Level 5 before the last boss, I can have off play time by getting three endings at once. But if I do pass Level 5 the moment I get a chance, I won't miss out on all those talk Croix-girl topics, the girl-girl topics, I won't have to wait so long to see the rest of a Cosmosphere, and I get more spells.

This is a tough decision. At least with Ar Tonelico 1 I only had to worry about two playthroughs, the second of which I could skip Phase 1 entirely by saving at the right place (well, sorta, actually I saved right before you decide who to insert that certain crystal to which changes the song that plays in the next boss fight and a CG you see).

Also, we so need a new thread. If one isn't started by the time I return later today, I guess I'll try and start one myself.
