I don't know why the physically bigger, stronger woman works so well as the shy, sweet, submissive one, and the maid as the aggressor, but it does. Both in canon and fanon, I can't imagine my Meiling as anything other then sweet, good-natured, and a little shy.

Of course, Sakuya gets a rap for harshness in the fanon that isn't supported by the canon.

Shiki does mention that she's 'too cold' towards other humans; presumably this was even more true before EoSD. And she doesn't really seem to leave the SDM except on errands, so unless Remi's holding a party or something, anyone who crosses her path is probably an intruder. Likewise, Sakuya was the one who suggested fetching a damp towel when they dragged Meiling in from the sun (Patchy didn't give a damn,) which was, interestingly enough, also the ending which finished with Meiling concluding "she'd fight on the front lines to save everyone." Contrast that with her habit of slacking off and napping while guarding the gate, and a picture emerges of a woman who's certainly courageous and competent, but not a hardass simply for the sake of being a hardass (like trying to guard an entire mansion against intruders who are essentially harmless.)

In both cases, the characters are more nuanced then fanon often gives them credit for.

I think it depends on who she's dealing with. According to Perfect Memento, she's polite but distant towards people from the human village when out shopping, and hostile to people who show up at the mansion.

Actual guests or some favored figures (Remi is fond of Reimu, after all) are going to see the Perfect and Elegant, occasionally cute and ditzy version. Meiling and possibly the fairy maids would see a different side of her, and if you're an intruder, then... suddenly, knives everywhere, etc..

The question of just where Sakuya came from, why she's subservient to two bratty vampires, and why she's so distant is one of the better questions in the canon, IMO. On one side, she's got this ice bitch thing going on, but at other times you see Sakuya being a lot more compassionate then you might expect (hiding Marisa behind a bookshelf when Remilia came sniffing about, even lying to cover for her.)
