G-Senjou no Maou, was recently translated and is really nice, the first 2 chapters are a bit boring but the last three are a rollercoaster ride. I literally couldn't stop reading until the end. Another nice recommendation is Higurashi no Naku koro ni, although I found it a bit slow more than once and it has horror too. I'd also say that Cross Channel might be good too, but I'm not sure if it qualifies as Thriller. I'd recommend Umineko but no, avoid it like the plague. The Infinity games are also enjoyable though again I don't believe they are really Thrillers (Ever17 and Remember11 are translated, Never7 is being translated, 12riven and that other one are in oblivion).

You might want to make your own thread next time, even though less people would see it more people would answer, most people here will hate you for asking for recommendations on this thread. VNDB (vndb.org) has a nice advanced search system with tags, original language and available language support, so you might want to try that (it's not like there will be many results, so you can filter out the partially translated ones by hand). Project member guy here. For the UMPTEENTH time again: (you know what, I'm going to put this in the updates again because this is just ridiculous that no one reads what I said, and I have to repeat this every fucking day).
IT CANNOT BE LICENSED, because the story breaks major taboos which WOULDN'T work in a license (read: would be censored in an official license), and because we already tinkered far too much from the various relases (voicepatch from Saturn, saturn only scenes, pc98 decensored erocgs etc), and all those modifications CANNOT be included in the off-chance it would be licensed, because license works on one release, not three. Please understand this, because I'm really and sick of explaining this every bloody day.
Moreover, I'm sitting on multiple fantl=>licensed projects, do you think I'd wanna see Yu-no, my favorite game to be under the same circumstances than those, because licensing is a massive pain in the ass where every step takes fucking months? You can take my word for it that NO, it won't be licensed, even if someone would be stupid enough to think it has a remote chance of making any kind of profit.
The reason it has not moved this week, because new Editor is still kinda busy with his job. He said he's gonna put a few hours in every night when he settled down. Thankfully, he really loves the game, so bloody hell, he's at least motivated to work on it, just he doesn't have all day for it.

Wow, someone did read my post.
Yes, it'll have a translation patch (which has the extra scenes from the Saturn, and the erocgs from the PC98), and then a somewhat larger (700+mb) voice patch separately. Neither of them will require the releases it takes stuff out from.
You will only need the windows classics release (which is kinda hard to import though since it's quite rare), and then those 2 patches.

This. Shit translations wouldn't be a problem if VNs were like anime where there's five sub groups working on each one, but once someone starts translating a VN nobody else can touch it.

Don't be retarded. This is because the VN community is a thousand times smaller and a VN has a thousand times more to translate and the writing is a thousand times more complex.

Because of this wasted effort really hurts the community, so having two teams working on the same project is far more harmful as we need all we can get.

Holy fucking christ thats the most retarded arguement I've heard in years. How can somebody make a translation from japanese to english without making the translation "more english"? >> No.6821019

The backing behind literal translation is that 'literal integrity' is given top priority, meaning it's retained even at the sacrifice of not actually portraying what the sentence was trying to say, or the result ends up not meeting English standards, so yeah.

That's not what formal equivalence means at all. Formal equivalence can compromise the natural expression of a language, but if the meaning is also compromised, then it is not a translation. A simple example is double negatives in Japanese. Carry them directly over into English and you get sentences that mean the exact opposite. That is not equivalent in any way.

I don't think there's a such thing as formal equivalence where the meaning isn't compromised in some way. I mean, you may get across a 'general idea' but if you don't take some liberties, there are some subtleties in the meaning that you are going to lose. The difference between formal and dynamic is basically that dynamic equivalence attempts to account for these subtleties in some way by taking liberties while formal just completely ignores them

I'm not arguing with that point since it is quite right, but there's usually a little more to it than that, mostly when it comes to specific wording or cultural differences, especially for things like similies, metaphors, and analogies. Personally, I think 99% of the people that advocate formal equivalence do it as an excuse for being shitty translators instead of actually having enough of a grasp of both languages to be able to make judgement calls like that.

>> No.6821803

>>6821196
It is a pain, that much is certain. I know from experience from dealing with the translation of german or french texts into english. Sometimes a word just does not have a word with an equal meaning in that other language. In that case, you just pick the closest possible word you can think of, but there will always someone who thinks that it should be translated as something else. In this case, though, the translation comes out as nonsense, which I wouldn't classify as a translation at all. Translating a language into another language means using the rules of that language, so original meanings have to take the rules into account or their worthless.
