Why are the AERO FIGHTERS/SONIC WINGS games so awesome?

I always thought they were all pretty mediocre games, honestly, the fact they were developed by former Psikyo employees also brought me to identify them as a rip-off of Strikers 1945.
To me, their only merit that is undeniable is the "LOL so randum XD" element. I mean, the early games had you fighting against flying rocket pagodas and by the third game they just threw every kind of sense out of the window for stuff like giant mahjong tiles dressed like Sailor Moon and Matrioska bombs.
