Because that's not what their damn county's name is. Why can't each country call other countries what that countries' name is? I realize it might be vaguely difficult in countries whose languages include things like glottal stops and such but in a world where we have the internet, hipsters, women, hippies, and leftards, why has no one suggested we call it fucking Nippon or whatever?

Japan has shifted to calling themselves Nihon.

>> No.6797688

>>6797634

Well I wasn't sure. Honestly this is not a board I come to or an interest I share. I just saw the headline on the front page and popped into the thread because I've always been curious/upset about this phenomena. So thanks for the clarification.

Why Nihon instead of Nippon now if you know? I guess I can see why maybe each countries calls other countries what they please since you can never keep track of all the shifting around like Japan apparently is doing. Like Myanmar-Burma etc. We (by which I mean fat filthy Americans) could stand to give established countries who are currently our allies the benefit of having their own name such as Germany, Japan, and etc.

How to you pronounce that? I've been pronouncing that as "Douche"land.

>> No.6798305

あああ 日本人=niponese for easier explanation. They call themselves a whole load of things but it wont make much sense unless you understand their Kanji and mythology Amatsu etc etc. I think we call them Japanese because of Marco Polo. He wrote about Zipangu and when it got translated it came out to something like juhpein so the Europeans have been using that ever since. btw nihon means sun origin so thats where the land of the rising sun and stuff came from

>> No.6798314

Sounds similar to the title of that one show which was like a Japanese version of The Final Countdown.
