I hate touhou.

I decided to check it out and see what the fuss was all about. To my surpirse all it was, was some crappy little arcade games, even pacman is more fun than this shit. The only redeeming quality being the musical score and the artwork of the characters which exists outside of the game.

Please, enlighten me as to why you retards are so obsessed over this shit? I want some valid answers.

The characters are not very fleshed out, giving a huge room for imagination on what the world and characters themselves can be. This lead to a myriad of doujin works from various artists. The music is great too, which has many spins and remixes. Then there are the detestable cosplayers, who also bring in popularity, however bad it may be.

Most of the fanbase do not play the game, rather just stick to the comics, music, etc.

I play it mainly for the patterns who represent each character, I find it extremely amusing how one can make drawing of bullets that you need to dodge between extremely close gaps, when the bullet is obviously hitting you. The feeling when you manage to do a deathbomb (not in IN) or survive a loli lauching the whole planet agaisn't you is awesome.

Aside from that, the soundtrack, even if not the best, makes the game extremely fun to play and the number of flashes and animations made with them, alongside with doujins give some indepth to characters, even when it canonically isn't given much importance (Nitori fear of people, Parsee past, Yuugi hate agaisn't Humans).

The fighting games are mediocre, beg pardon, but I love to play them online as I do with PoFV. Some of the doujins game are also fun (Genius, SML,forgot-the-name-defence-game and some Danmakufu Scripts).

Because the games are fucking good. If they legitimately sucked the series would never have gotten a following.

The whole project is handled by 1 indie developer who has been doing these since 1996, hence the artwork is crappy and such because he does EVERYTHING himself, that is what an indie dev fucking is.

He knows how to make good STG though and that is what matters. You see, many other STG revolve around "flood the screen with bullets and lolyoudie unless you memorize the 1 spot you need to sit in to survive", aka artificially induced difficulty. Touhou isn't like those other lesser STG.

Perhaps most importantly it's actually hard too, one of the few hard series still going, in an age where the mighty have fallen.. SFIV is slowed down casual shit, BB is like dumbed-down GGXX, and MVC3 is already shaping up to be more casualshit. If you're not good at STG then Touhou will fucking bring you to your knees.

It's a real challenge; it takes dedication and skill development (massively so if you're not good at STG by default) to clear the games on the hardest difficulty. Sit down the average person from /v/, and lock them to the chair until they can beat a Touhou on Lunatic, and they will fail until they burst into treats.

I agree with all of that, and will add:

It's one of the best escapist settings around. The characters are all girls, and despite the limited depth their personalities are nowhere near cliche and there's nary a hint of any romance outside of the fandom. ZUN also fits an amazing number of often-clever references into the games.

The strangeness of the dialogue is interesting and appealing to me. The plots are weird and wacky and fun. They have superpowers and aren't actually limited in their use - there's none of that "Godlike Power, Collecting Dust" like a lot of comics and games.

In IN they stop the night, just because the moon has been tampered with. It's not even a great reason and they do it anyway. Why? Fuck you, I'll stop the night and danmaku the shit outta bitches don't get out the way.

Some of the doujins are abso-fuckinglutely fantastic, even if there are a considerable number of stupid ones. Same goes for the fanart, though I still hold that ZUN's artwork has a certain charm to it.
