Parasect is based on a cicada nymph parasitized by the Cordyceps fungus. Cordyceps species grow on many insect hosts and literally take over the host's entire body, even entering the brain and affecting its behavior. Cordyceps unilateralis, for example, doesn't just kill the ants it grows on; it instead makes them clamp on blades of grass displaying exact conditions for optimal fungus growth, only killing them afterwards. After the insect's death, the fungus typically sprouts from its body, using the exoskeleton to better anchor itself, and eventually the fruiting bodies emerge and spread their spores, hopefully to take over more insects. Other parasites show similar abilities, such as horsehair worms that force their insect hosts to drown themselves, the wasp Hymenoepimecis argyraphaga that takes control of the host spider's brain to make it construct a web specifically to protect its pupae, Glyptapanteles species (also wasps) that brainwash caterpillars into acting as personal guardians, nematodes of genus Mermis that make ants look (and act) like fruit, Toxoplasma gondii that erases mice's traditional fear of feline scent and many others.

In Parasect's case the poor cicada nymph is never granted the mercy of death, instead its brain is completely taken over by the fungus, so the insect seeks damp, dark places to better accommodate its parasite. Parasect never becomes an adult cicada, but when it (somehow) lays its eggs, the fungus takes the opportunity to deposit its spores onto those as well, and a few thousand steps later you have a new Paras to repeat the cycle.
