There are a couple of games that require you to have an UMD disc inserted for it to work, but supposedly any UMD works, so you can just get something out of the bargain bin.

Hacking a PSP depends on the MOTHERBOARD. For example, a 2000 with the right mobo, it does not matter what kind of FW is on there. It will be hackable no matter what.

PSP 1000s are pretty old by now. While they might be sturdier than the new models, you'll regret it once you realise how much heavier and bigger they are. Even if that didn't bother you, you would hate the D-Pad on the 1k series if you weren't used to it (its very, very difficult to do diagonals on the 1k d-pad).

Just get a 3k or a Go, do the 6.31 ChickHen on it and instead of turning it off, just put it in standby and plug in the charger.

Call me old school, but if you've got a unit that supports it,and 1ks do, I'd suggest going M33-6 firmware over chickhen since most of the homebrew out there was developed on and for M33 series firmware. Even newer games work on it (with some patching). It tends to have fewer compatibility issues overall and it's very stable. The only issue you may run into is that newer games will require newer firmware versions, but there's ways of patching the games to play on M33-6 still. Many sites even offer pre-patched ISOs and CSOs.
