So /jp/,

How popular are American Superhero comics in Japan?

I'd assume that with all the movies based on them that have been grossing so much money over there, the awareness and common knowledge of various superheroes has increased significantly. On relation of my pic, I'm pretty sure Spiderman is the most popular over there.

What's opinion and/or knowings of this subject?

It's a matter of what comics are translated and published over there. A Toshiaki from a while back mentioned that Marvel mostly publishes X-Men stuff over in Japan, but there's a few scanslation teams working independently as well.

Batman: TAS also airs on Japan's version of Cartoon Network, as demonstrated by the now-famous image of the trio from Powerpuff Girls Z surrounded by the rest of CN's repertoire (every character that appeared there was part of CN's lineup at the time; not sure what it is now).

And while they're not exactly superheroes, Wacky Races is VERY popular. There's a DVD box set available over there.

Basically Marvel and Toei cut a deal to promote Spiderman in Japan and Marvel gave Toei free range to do whatever they wanted. Much to Marvel's surprise, they change everything and make Spiderman the first tokusatsu hero, paving the way for the millions of more or less identical sentai shows afterwards. Later he gets a giant robot as well

By editorial mandate of editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, Spider-Man made a deal with the devil that retconned, among other things, his marriage to Mary-Jane. Thereby undoing twenty years of continuity and a lot of really touching comics involving the marriage.

Spider-Man's been garbage since then. Quesada was literally the only person in Marvel who thought this was a good idea.

The black haired one is Toshiaki, Futaba's version of Anonymous (though I guess it'd be more accurate to say Anoymous is 4chan's Toshiaki). Early in Futaba's history a really stupid guy who used the name Toshiaki made himself notorious. A lot of people would use Toshiaki's name after that as a joke, and eventually the admin made it so that leaving the name field blank automatically named you Toshiaki.

The maid is Medoi, the most well-known of the Nijiura Maids. It's a big Futaba meme. http://shii.org/maids/
