New theory of mine:

Real Battler (the one that the Battler we all know and possibly love) is the 17th person on Rokkenjima, thereby fulfilling the place that Kanon was supposed to be. Real Battler is the culprit and killed everyone, and then put the blame on Kyrie because he hated her or something.

I'm going to sum up my Kanontrice theory.

1)Yasu falls off a cliff but is saved by Nanjo, and is subsequently raised by Kumasawa/Genji.

2)When Yasu is older, Kumasawa brings her to work. To hide her from Kinzo but keep her close, she is disguised as a servant, and hidden in one of the far away rooms when she stays the night.

3) Yasu starts taking a liking to Shannon, a very servant. Yasu as she said admired Shannon, and makes her into her ideal. Yasu "Play pretends" as a real servant.

4)Yasu begins to imagine Shannon as her close friend in Yukuin house. In reality, Yasu does not have the confidence to talk to Shannon but stalks her.

5) At some point, Yasu lends Shannon a mystery novel. Soon after, Yasu's condition takes a turn for the worse and she disappears, - possibly off the island entirely. Yasu curses her body, her illness and Genji and Kumasawa. It's around then she most seriously starts to imagine herself as a witch, who need not worry about an earthly body.

6) Yasu eventually makes a full recovery(?) and returns to the Island, still as a "witch" in her mind. Here she hides in the far rooms once again and spends the day wandering the forest. She resumes stalking Shannon, and watches her with Battler. Yasu doesn't understand love, and is fascinated by their relationship. Her obsession begins to shift onto Battler as well as Shannon.

7) Yasu is now coming of age it is more necessary than ever to hide her from Kinzo, while keeping her close. Yasu feels bad for Shannon and wants to know more about Battler, so talks to Genji and creates the "Kanon" persona, which will allow her to be as close to Shannon as possible.

8) Jessica beings expressing interest in Kanon, which is awkward for Yasu. Shannon eventually forgets Battler, while Yasu develops an obsession for him just as she did for Shannon and the world of witches. She promises to return the love to Shannon, but perhaps something happened? Eventually Kanon/Yasu tells everything to Jessica, and she becomes part of the "Plan".

As an addendum, I think Yasu could have originally been male, so it might not even have been a case of "hiding" the child as Kanon. Because of the suicidal depression transsexuals tend to get, she curses everyone for saving her. Of course, Lion in the other Kakera still has "gender issues" - which is alluded to with Jessica being the same too.

With Shkannontrice, nobody is outright saying it happened. Bern is "proposing" the theory but not directly stating it as fact. Also, real life doesn't have as many plot twists and hidden meanings and doesn't troll the reader since it's not conscious of an observer.

Comparing Holocaust denial to Shkannontrice denial is retarded. A lot of the more far fetched theories in Umineko have already come true.

All the evidence in the early games points to the Witch Beatrice killing with her magic. But we know that's BS. We can't take everything at face value. There are things in Umineko that are meant to mislead us.

Also, there's nothing inherently wrong with Holocaust denial if that person then accepts it when they're corrected.

But nobody's managed to correct Kanontrice. So in fact, they're the ones ignoring the evidence presented to them.

The usual stance towards holocaust deniers is to ignore them. They can't actually be reasoned with. It's not that they don't believe it because they don't have enough evidence it's that they won't believe it unless you show them something that absolutely, objectively, beyond any and all doubt proves that it happened. If you think about it this ending actually makes a lot of sense. Meta-world is all inside of Battlers head. You could also say that the meta-world is Battler talking with Auau and Ange trying to figure out the truth. Games 1-7 are stories written by various authors. 1 and 2 are possible scenarios written by Yasu and were found in the bottles. 3, 4, and I think 5 were written by Auau. After Battler read these stories he remembered/realized what really happened and came up with episode 6. Ange read this story and called bullshit on it and thus episode 7 was written probably by Auau. Ange can't believe this shit so Battler tells her the truth in episode 8. I can't believe this shit Ryukishi is a genius.

You know what disappoints me the most? The fact that, if you take a look at the story in its entirety, it could've been a mindblowing, emotional rollercoaster ride that would've left us with gaping mouths at how meta and well thought out it was.

A story of a series of murders is replayed over and over again, as a man battles against a witch to uncover the truth. Slowly, it is revealed that more and more of what we assumed to be reality were all fictional constructs. The ending reveals that it was all the personal journey of a shattered man who struggles to piece together his broken past, by writing it all down on paper.

The plot points are ALL THERE. That's the thing. It could've been an amazing story. It makes sense why the episodes keep repeating the same incident, in different kakera. Kakera are old Battler looking through all the possibilities of what happened in his past until he remembers the right one. The meta-characters are old Battler's helpers in taking apart and studying what he knows about Rokkenjima.

But, as ingenious as Ryukishi may be sometimes, he's just... shit at writing. Especially with a dead BT.

Ange actually serves an important function in the story. You notice how in ep. 1 - 3, meta-Battler was having absolutely no luck wading through all these red truths and fantasy bullshit. Ange was, in a sense, a restart to Battler's self-exploration, where he discarded the meta-world metaphor entirely for a while and instead... started writing from the PoV of his little sister exploring the remains of Rokkenjima and piecing the past together from there.

Meta-world can be seen as Battler's attempts to piece together his past through his vague memories.

Ange, on the other hand, are Battler's attempts to discover the truth about Rokkenjima through an entirely different method, by discarding his own memories entirely and relying on cold hard detective work, investigating Rokkenjima in its present day.

He ruins his story by trying to surprise his readers by setting it up as a mystery, then discarding it in favor of HEART and DRAMA. He fucks up by handing the reader what appears to be Higurashi all over again (solve the mystery by looking at X Y and Z), then discarding it all yet again and saying, "THOSE WERE ALL FAKE! Well, we sorta need to kill everyone on this island, so could you help us by killing her?" Battler faked her death, and reported to his parents that he had killed her. He then ran away from her.

It was the best he could reasonably do, in my opinion. Moralfags are calling him a coward for not trying to save anyone else, but really, he could only save Shannon. Trying to save anyone else would require him to go up against his armed parents, which would not be a good idea. Even if he simply warned them of impending mass murder instead of actually protecting them, Rudolf and Kyrie would catch on that someone leaked their plans, that someone being Battler.

The problem is that he did not foreshadow only these events, he foreshadowed 1000 outcomes and circumstances.
It's like mixing all together 20 puzzles that have a similar pic, and you get vague clues as to which is the correct one.
It's TIRING to distinguish, one of the solutions could fit the criteria but it was not the one intended.
You could get excited/interested from the various parts of the pic you see, but when you realize what actually mattered and how it could be done, it just feels...pointless.

THE POWAR OF FRENSHIP manages to destroy god interminable fate, and replace friendship with love, and you have Umineko. Instead though, we get realistic Battler at the very end, not trying with all his might to save everyone, just worried about himself, and Kohaku.

For the most part, I like how Umineko turned out. I think what it became is much more interesting than some typical, dull murder mystery. The themes are interesting to me and Ryukishi did a good job of driving them home.

However, one thing I can agree was a fuck up on Ryukishi's part was the emphasis placed on closed rooms and individual mysteries and such, and how he added stuff that ended up being totally irrelevant and making the story even more convoluted (Kinzo being dead, Shkannontrice) in order to make the closed rooms more difficult. That stuff ended up not being important at all, and it's because he made it seem like it was that there is so much backlash.

If Umineko had just been written a little more neatly, I think it could've been a masterpiece.

This is why I'm saying you cannot call Umineko a mystery. There were several puzzles, and a mystery so to say. But overall, the novel itself wasn't a mystery novel. There was a lot of foreshadowing for the ending indeed, but there was no real way for the reader to tell how the truth of the island actually came to be.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it certainly goes against the hype Umineko had along with its apparent initial premise. Of course, again, this is not a bad thing, since this will come to how fans decide to judge it. However, if the general opinion ends up not being positive, I don't think R07 should be surprised.

Alright, now that I kind of understand what's going on with the ending and the whole of Umineko.

Overall, I liked it. I won't deny that I had a shitload of fun reading and then debating theories with /jp/. EP8 doesn't render the previous episodes pointless just because they were fiction. The whole fucking story is fiction, after all.

Anyways. I think people just need to take it easy in general. Umineko isn't the worst thing ever, nor is it the best, but if you got any sort of enjoyment out of it at one point or another then that's all that matters in the end, right?

Even if BT hadn't died, I don't think this would've been fixed. The earlier arcs were better in terms of putting significance on... details that needed significance, but only in their self-contained story. I'm under the impression that Ryukishi never told BT any of the plot details beyond the episode that he was currently writing (wouldn't want to spoil the story for your main reader).

So, in the end, had BT remained alive and Ryukishi's waifu, each episode would've been written better individually, but the overarching story would've been still shittily paced.
