My thread died before I got back to my hotel. For anyone seeing this for the first time, I'm posting information and pictures from my trip to comiket and selling doujinshi.

Today was aimed at girls so mostly BL. Though there was Yan-Yam that was extremely popular. I went mostly in the corporate booths. I didn't want to wait for the booths with crazy lines so I'll go find what they were selling in akiba later. Tomorrow is another calm day and then day 3 I have over 100 doujin I need to buy so that's going to be one hell of a mission...

What's everyone getting by the way? Tomorrow I'm thinking about picking up this year's CROWS CLAW cd, and then just wander about the touhou boths and see if I find anything curious. Any recommendations? Today I did all the commercial booths and picked up a cutesy Hare nochi Guu doujinshi (non-ero), but that's about it.

Also, anyone know if ZTS is going to release anything this comiket? Haven't seen them in the catalog.

Yan-Yam was totally worth it today since nobody else had a line. It was only and hour and change. And I still had everything on my to-do list, including random browsing, done by 2 PM.

Also, Plum's PSG book was delicious, as expected. And the stick poster/calendar set he had was quite delightful.

Tomorrow's Touhouket should be nice and easy, but yeah, there's just too much awesome stuff coming out on day 3.

And Trader is a wonderful store. The eroge floor of any Trader is always a bounty of wonder. But no trip to Akiba is complete without a stop at Super Potato, the supreme Mecca of retro gaming. If Super Potato doesn't have it, it probably doesn't exist.

Yeah sure, Comiket is an annual event for /jp/, but there are no mods that cares about /jp/ in that way and thus it has been up to us to rebump the threads all the time, like all the previous comikets.

Besides, should it get stickied I figure it would be filled with a bunch of shit posts from other boards ala "Hurr! Sticky!".
But at the same time I guess it could protect the lifespan of the thread, but yeah.

Completely unrelated, but does anyone know how to localize guro? I've tried searching (in the catalog CD) for エログロ and グロ but the latter brings up a whole lot of false positives, while the former hardly returns anything. I want to buy something freaky and weird.

Think about it. It's an uncannily beautiful world. You have a bunch of uncannily and unnatural looking beautiful girls with the ability to destroy civilizations, and they just don't care. The world is their toy, but they'd rather have tea parties than make war. It sounds a lot like the chaotic alignment-free monsters of lovecraft, only in little girl form. Yukari, most likely nyarlothep, visits ZUN with tales of a terrible land which he interprets through his warped perception as tales of gensokyo and it's wonderful inhabitants. Off of these he bases various games. He's also quite thin, considering his warped mind and the way he might see food. Beer, being essence of rotted grass and seeds, is probably one of the few things that taste somewhat good to him. Poor guy.

Anyways, I hope my friend can get me the Syrufit x Cytokine release, and the Iemitsu. compilation box set for sure. Since he wasn't planning to line up for those and I asked him just recently, he's gonna line up for those after his own shopping is done.

I guess I'm the only one who mostly just browsed around and buy maybe 7 or 8 doujinshi. You could call me picky when it comes to drawing styles, stories, etc.

The only time I've been to Comiket was 78 this summer.
I'd love to go again since I kinda liked looking at all the stuff all these people had put a lot of work into.

What I really liked was this bag I bought along with a Sengoku Rance doujinshi, and I wish I could go there again just to see if I could get more stuff like it.

A guy I met (and started exchanging emails with) told me that calendars are popular during winter Comiket since the new year is right around the corner.
I'm reluctant on buying stuff I haven't actually held in my hands - not to mention that the shipping would kill me. And I guess I just find it more fun actually buying this stuff face to face with the people who made it.

Any one else like that, or do you all just haul hundreds of titles with you on the plane back home?

The reason I brought up Transformers is because it's regularly defended as "Transformers isn't shakespear". But it doesn't matter, a lot of the comics, especially the Generation 2 ones, were pretty enjoyable in a more refined manner than the MTV generation presentation that is Michael Bay's toss. There are things that are cheesy but still have a heart, and then there's stuff that just makes you cringe. But people are so used to it, their cringe reflexes are deadened. Perhaps that's why they confuse enjoyable visual novels with genuinely cringe worthy fiction.

That's about my level of comprehension, but it gets me by a lot of stuff I buy so I don't mind. I hear you on the whole plot driven thing though, I can't read any Japanese terms related to specific topics such as historical/military/mafia so I don't bother buying the doujin/VNs related to it. Go with the DS. Get an R4 and then you can read VNs and play any game you want. I don't recommend pirating, but InazumaEleven1 is pretty pricey since it's somewhat hard to get now(?).

Today, I dreamed I went to Comiket.
I got some stuff I wanted, but for some reason I also got a bunch of One Piece merchandise(I don't think those were doujinshi) that was for some reason given out for free to a limited number of people - even though I've never read/watched One Piece, nor do I know if it has any official presence at Comiket.
When I was about to leave, I noticed a kid that looked really sad whose friends tried to cheer him up - apparently, he waited in line to get the One Piece merchandise, but he didn't get it. Since I didn't even want the stuff in the first place, I started talking with him in my extremely broken Japanese(that was a weird part, normally in my dreams language is non-existent, but here I had to make a clear effort to speak actual Japanese words), and after confirming that this was what he wanted, I gave it to him. He was really happy, and I made friends with a 12-year old Japanese kid.
It was a weird dream. It didn't make any sense, but it was kind of nice.

I find it kind of sad that a community would want to keep musical treasures to themselves, rather than spread the joy. Despite being in what.cd, TL, blackcats, and other private trackers, everything I rip and scan gets released on my seedbox to public sites (demonoid, TPB, and h33t), since I want others to enjoy the goodies I've discovered.

At least I got a V0 of it, even with nice equipment my ears can't discern between a V2 and a FLAC. Just nice to have though for converting to various formats and archiving.

Yes and no. When it comes to major circles (i.e. wall/shutter circles) the books themselves will be readily available at K-Book, Tora no Ana, etc, within a day or two. Of course, the price will double, triple, or quadruple.

What you won't find in stores are the limited edition sets that circles put out that usually involve a bag, a copy-bon, and goodies like key chains, phone straps, stick posters, and calendars. You'll see the sets available from the the top tier of circles (Udon-ya, Cut a Dash, etc) but again the prices will have jumped several fold. Udon-ya's set was 1500 at Comic Market, and the cheapest I saw it in a store was 5000, with the more common price being 6300.

Other things you won't find in stores are books from small, no-name circles. For example, we found a circle doing a Happy Tree Friends book and another one doing an anthropomorphized Tom and Jerry BL book. Had to pick those up for their WTF value since you will never, ever sees them in stores. Fortunately, with small circles you almost never have a line. You can just walk right up, check out their books, and even have time to chat.

The other reason to stand in line is for the intangible value of directly supporting the artist. It's just not same feeling as buying it from a store.

Well, there are strong reasons why people keep going to Comiket instead of just getting the same thing at a local store with the benefit of store points on a discount card.... Also, the store copy may be a 2nd or higher printing since the 1st edition is sold by the author. Some collectors prize that while casual collectors don't.

And as the prior poster said, store prices for the first few months after Comiket for the same item may be up to 4 times the MSRP list price. It's only when the book enters its last few printings or it becomes old and remaindered does the price come down. So those of you who think that Plecomi doujin buying service has high prices should rethink the actual cost of a doujin.

By the way, for the casual scanlated doujin collectors, you should realize and be grateful that multiple fans have EACH spent thousands of dollars buying and sponsoring translations. A lot of fans think that simply everything magically comes from Share in a timely, well-centered, and clean manner, but this is not the case. While there is a thankfully liberal attitude in the case of fans helping the less fortunate, one wonders with the changing times how long this can continue on the scale it has. For example, one fan has put out approx 20,000 from his own pocket of which all were freely available. He, like me, are "retired" from active fandom. I hope upcoming new fans keep having a generous liberal spirit while we old fans of the 1980's and 1990's wane out of fandom.

It really depends. It's possible to spend several hours in line for a single circle. That didn't happen to me this time, and I think the longest line I was in was between 60 and 90 minutes. Although supposedly 07th Expansion's line was absolutely ungodly. Glad I skipped that one. So yeah, there is a big luck factor involved. Basically, you need to A) examine the catalog very carefully to develop an effective plan of attack, B) minimize trips back and forth between halls, and C) don't expect to get everything on your list.

He barfed after eating some sushi iirc. Since back then I don't think sushi was that popular in the U.S yet, it wouldn't surprise me if he'd never eaten it before... Comiket lasts for 6 hours a day. The longest line in the event I believe would be the Nanoha line. If you happened to start lining up for the Nanoha booth in its peak traffic on the first day (like I did), that will take you a good four hours in line, literally. This was for C77. Tried again in C79, lining up from 9pm night before for the advantage, and aimed straight for it this time. Still took me a good two hours in line, even after all that effort, and mostly knowing what I'm doing.

So if you're planning on visiting two or more large booths, you don't have a chance if you want their limited sets, unless you were to line up overnight. They'll still most likely have the smaller things, like any games or doujins they would be selling, but those can easily be found in stores anywhere else anyway, albeit with the little extra costs.
