Not too much is known about her actually aside from that. She has one of the most potentially OP powers in all of Touhou although it's vague as to what its limits are. She seems unphased by the player in her encounter and actually just kind of hangs around watching you after you beat her as the midboss fight, all in all it appears that she treats you as no more than an amusing plaything.

Hoshiguma Yuugi. An oni, a Japanese demon/ogre/giant/troll type.
Hangs around Former Hell, which is supposedly a part of buddhist hell that has been sold off.
One of the four "Deva of the Mountain", living legends with the oni. Companion/partner in crime of Ibuki Suika, another deva. The other two are currently unknown.
Bloody strong, constantly drunk, famous or infamous for fighting one-handed in her own boss battle. Has the vaguely specified power over "supernatural phenomena".

Yeah, in real life, maybe. When an author creates a fictional character, why wouldn't they try to pack as many meanings into their name as possible?

>>6703661
I like to think Marisa's name is actually just pronounced "Marissa".

I wish. May be more information in the legend of Shuten Douji, but have yet to find any version of it that hasn't been cut down or altered.

If there is no obvious answer, guessing the whole "star bear" theme may be some expression or metaphor that needed no explanation at the time, but has since been forgotten.

Despite my meager grasp of Japanese I read Hoshiguma the first time I saw it as 'star bear'. I assumed it referred to the Ursa Major/Minor constellations.

Quite possible. Not sure if the Japanese referred to Ursa Major as a "bear" before recently, or went with the Chinese interpretation, though.

Although it's clearly exxagerated or metaphorical, it's not unheard of having oni accused of punching holes in the sky.

After a chance remark on why someone wouldn't do a drow because he wouldn't like to go where spiders might have already nested, we had a thread on /tg/ on how many spiders could fit into a drow vagina.
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/11262498/
We calculated something on the lines of around 8,300 8mm spiders for a bloated, spider pregnant drow.

Well it's gone now, and /a/'s archive doesn't appear to be restored yet, but, moot was in there talking. He said mostly completely trivial stuff as usual, but, someone asked about a new janitor for /jp/ and vouched for you since you are ultra-qualified. Surprisingly enough, moot replied, he said for you to email him. We'll vouch for you again if asked.

Anyone else who was there can back me up on this, if not you can just wait for /a/'s archive to catch up.

I'm no expert on my own Slavic mythology, but I don't think we have anything equivalent to your Norse Ogres.
In the Pagan times we did have tons of weird gods and demons. However the German scribes of the 10th century were too busy dying of diseases to properly record the myths behind each and everyone.
