Have you tried no$gba? Less laggy than DeSmuME. If you have the freeze problem on it, you just need to play yhe game until after the first puzzle on DeSmuME, export the sav into no$gba sav format, and continue from there.

The save type as to be set to EEPROM512 kbit, and if you freeze at the first puzzle try patching it with this, making sure to delete your save file as well so that the emulator creates a new save.

Also, in DeSmuME, you can try going into Control -> Emulation settings and untick the Advance Bus timing thing.
