So /jp/, for $600 we can start making our own figurines.

Technology is amazing.

>> No.6678291

what?

>> No.6678287

Those of us who can CAD, anyway.

>> No.6678295

What kind of material is needed? If it's a specific material designed for such how much would it cost?

>> No.6678305

Too bad it can't paint/color things as well.

>> No.6678307

>>6678287
Only one person needs to know it. They can just make it and put the file up online for everyone to download and print for themselves.

it's the only way my ass is going to have a stake of purgatory or siesta. or a beatrice, for that matter.

I'll stick to buying the official releases.

well i'm in the 3d industry as an animator so that's how i get paid
the modeling and texturing are more for fun though. my company leaves that to the specialists

>Just to be upfront. This does not include the following:
>MK5 Plastruder
$185
>Filament Spindle Box Kit
$95
>Automated Build Platform
$160
Total: $1089, and a lot of assembly required

>> No.6678413

>>6678395
Those seem to be optional improvements to allow automated feeding instead of hand feeding, etc.

>> No.6678434

>>6678413
It seems you're right.
Nevermind.

The thought of having to assemble the Platsruder is horrible though. Me not so good at soldering SMD components.

>> No.6678440

How much does the materials for making a fig cost?

>> No.6678449

>>6678434
It might be impractical without those improvements, though. Watching the video on the page for the automated platform, it was working overnight to produce whatever it was making. So who knows, one piece might take over an hour of sitting there feeding it the plastic. Still, you may not have to upgrade the plastruder so that could save you $200.

Even if you do get all the upgrades though, $1000 is amazing for a 3D printer. Would be nice if you could throw them a few more hundred to assemble it.

>> No.6678457

>>6678440
About 1/4th of the price of a fig.

>> No.6678463

>>6678449
Assembly is all part of the fun!
It makes it feel more like it's your own!
Just ask /tg/ about why they enjoy gluing together their warhammers!

>> No.6678473

>>6678463
It's more due to the fact that if it does require soldering I might ruin my $1000 investment.

Actually their other product, Thing-O-Matic http://store.makerbot.com/makerbot-thing-o-matic.html is what I saw a few weeks ago. It's $1225 but completely automatic.

The most intimidating thing to me though, is painting the model once it's printed. I've never touched an airbrush and am bad at traditional painting in general.

>> No.6678481

These things can't make figurines. I am a CAD student and we have a $15,000 machine at my campus and it's really only usable with drafting programs to make fairly simple shapes. Needless to say, anything with complicated topology is especially of out of the question.

>> No.6678504

>>6678481
What if you make a GK?

>> No.6678516

I can't afford this, but if 3D Printers are this cheap now wouldn't it be much less costly to get things printed?

Also are there templates I can work on? For example if I wanted to make a small posable action figure, I'd want to make it as a series of model kit parts, but no way in hell am I going to be able to get everything to fit together exactly for sure. You have no concept of anything tactile in 3dsmax, obviously.

It'll look like a "custom" figure still obviously but it's still nice to have. I made a small custom figure of my own character from my novel. It does look obviously painted and a bit sloppy but then again so does a lot of shit Hasbro puts out these days. Hohoho.

Anyway, aren't there places that do colour printing? You could also design it as a model kit to make painting super easy.

>>6678767
Well, if you take it to the source, p2p music sharing, made commercial hard copy of music obsolete. Thanks for making me wear my tinfoil hat even harder.

I was kidding, but in the long run they just might be so awesome that ''standard'' figurines will just stop coming out as the typical figfag will be more appealed to have something completely up to his tastes.

>> No.6678856

>>6678730
Nope, because most people can't be assed to go paint them. You'd need to make it in pieces and have proficiency with making GK, and unless you are a grandmaster modeler there are companies out there putting out stuff better than you can do, so that's the way it will continue to be.

Also some people are completionist collectors of certain brands, and like having rare/exclusive figs etc.
