I just finished reading the main part of ep7, so I just want to clarify..

Yasu is Lion. Yasu creates Shannon as her servant personality and GaapBeatrice as a witch personality.

Shannon falls in love with Battler who never returns, she receives no letters and falls into DESPAIR. She shoves her love for Battler onto the ClairBeatrice persona who becomes Beatrice from the painting after Battler's ideal.

Shannon as Beatrice solves the epitaph and becomes the new head, but passess all of the responsibility to Krauss.

The Beatrice Maria talks to is really Shannon using the witch personality and mannerisims.

Is that about right? How is the eye color/hair color difference explained? A wig? contacts?

This, in turn, made Battler think that Shannon forgot about him and the promise, so he also repressed that memory and forgot it eventually.

Yasu is probably a little crazy. How could you not be when you're a sickly little kid who's lied to your whole life and eventually manipulated into becoming something you never wanted to become (Beatrice)?

But I don't think he has multiple personalities. Nothing matches up with what that entails in the real world. Yasu has, at first, imaginary friends in the form of Shannon and Gaaptrice. When Yasu decides to 'become a witch', he lets Shannon take over--or at least, that's what it appears to be at first.

But remember how Yasu was always clumsy and not the most reliable when it came to servant work? He created Shannon (who might or might not have been based on a real person) to be an ideal, to be someone to look up to. However, when Shannon 'takes over', she really is just like Yasu—still clumsy, maybe a little more reliable but only because she's been working there for quite a while. Yasu never really switched personalities, or anything like that—he's more or less the same as he was before. Also, Yasu was a nickname, and his real name (or blessed name) should be Shannon. So when people start to refer to him as Shannon, it's not like he has a different personality and is now demanding to be called that, that was his real name all along.

I just thought of something that makes Sayo Yasuda's motives much more believable, and justifiable to Battler:

"She honestly thought she was a witch, with magical powers. Thus, she honestly believed that even if she killed the family members, they'd all be resurrected at the end, in accordance with the epithet ritual. Therefore, she didn't think she was doing anything all that bad or cruel by planning their murders."

The question is, does Battler take a Kantian or Utilitarian perspective of morality ("the intentions of your actions determine their morality" vs "the results of your actions determine their morality"? When it comes to "deciding if it's a justifiable motive," it must be Kantian here.

There is no "real culprit" for the incident because nobody can know what really happened, it's not even sure it happened like episode 7.
Meta-Beatrice isn't Yasu, she is just the personification of the mystery, Battler felt bad for her.
It's stated times and times again in episode 7 that Yasu decided to create a roulette of fate, to do something similar to Kinzo, to create a miracle.
Her motive is never shown to be LET'S CREATE A MYSTERY SO FUN, she was just a sad existence who in desperation tried to leave herself to fate one last time.

Current prevalent theory relies on Shkannon.
Shkannon becomes Shannon and the leaves the cousins room, then becomes Kanon again, saves Battler, and goes into the closet. In the closet, Kanon "dies", and only Shannon remains.

Personally, I hate this theory, but I haven't been able to find a suitable alternative. It seems to lack heart, though- WHY would Kanon die?
EP7-wise, a possible explanation is that Kanon was made up to help Shannon deal with her love of Battler. After Shkannon saves Battler, Kanon is no longer needed, Shannon having come to terms with her love.

What if Battler was the culprit all along? Maybe he never forgot about Shannon, but purposefully made it look so in order to awake the insanity locked inside her that he found out about while he was bonding with her 6 years before the incident. He might have been so disgusted with Rudolf's actions that he wished death upon the Ushiromiyas, plus it's never really explained why he decided to go back, especially after George and Jessica (in EP7) were both fairly certain he'd never actually return.
