The meido was without doubt doing a good job.
Though Ihave been thinking wether or not it isn't true that the spammers tried to re-spam harder and harder as page after page got deleted.

In either way, one couldn't be sure to expect such a behaviour without trying it out for a while.
So I personally see no real flaw with the meido.

On the contrary it was wonderful to have someone who was online at /jp/ as often as the meido was.
And you should also be thankful, that it actually was someone with a level of understanding of /jp/, and not basically any other person from any other board or community who doesn't get this place due to lack of experience of it and lack of its history.

I'm not gonna lie to you, many times all I hoped was some sort of pat on my head and tell me I was doing okay. But I also knew I was starting to slip, becoming too overzealous and keep engaging the spammers (What was I thinking? Delete thread, see it again, repeat.)

I was really upset before, I admit that as well. It's not been a good couple of days, new meds acting up and all, and I reacted in the worst way possible (DELETE FUCKING EVERYTHING) but now that I take a step back and see it for what it is, I can't get that bothered.

Just drama from a place I no longer have to care for. Breaking an ironclad policy that I'm no longer bounded by.

For the record, I have this sense of trying to explain everything and annotate it for the future that I find difficult to suppress. Can't believe I still haven't learned the lesson that explaining every little thing is not always the best way to engage things.

Complete agreement on my part. I'm only advocating heavy-handed moderation, not restrictive definitions of acceptable threads. Occasional off-topic threads are necessary to maintain a light-hearted nature and blow off steam in a controlled manner, but when a small group makes most of the board off topic it should be met with maximum retribution. So moderation should be occasional, yet visible (public bans), memorable, and vigilant.

But considering how dedicated certain people are to shitting on this board it just became a witch hunt.

The problem stemmed from thinking of yourself as a crippled moderator, rather than well... a janitor. It's not a unique condition; you'd be surprised by how many janitors have ragequitted due to not being able to ban all those meanies who spam and call them faggets.
But really, you were hired to clean things up, not save the world. Ideally, a janitor is somebody embedded into the community who can be there to get rid of dicks and gore when they are posted during his or her daily lurking routine--not much more than that.
Methinks you were too concerned with living up to an already-established "meido" persona to realize how minimal your role is meant to be, and when moot didn't play along, you bitched about it.
Sometimes I wonder how many people remember that this is 4chan. The userbase is meant to guide things, and if quality is low, that is their own fault, and not an excuse for some authority figure to step in.

To be honest, the broken promises rather than the sisyphean nature of the job were what pushed me over the edge.

The best thing out of all of this is that the people that have taken the meido mantle (apron?) are far more capable than I was. They kept telling me to take it easy, to let the little things go, but I didn't listen.

It's true that there is a clear distinction between janitors and mods, and the AoC tried to cross this line, but I think it's also true that moot has paid way too little attention to the need for moderation and just left janitors to do the job where a mod is desperately needed. I can understand AoC's feelings, but it's pretty clear that a janitor has neither the place nor the power to do anything about.

Nope, especially nope on /jp/. There is no cohesive authoritative voice from the /jp/ community, it is split and divided in some senses. /jp/ needs someone who knows the slash and dash between the lines.

But remember this, or perhaps I will, we got this level of janitor work because of /jp/ Summer 2010, which was one of the worst and endless spam shitfests from the exact same people for countless months.

Although it was dramatic and heavy handed by a janitor, it was long over due. But the janitor was just one part of the moderation puzzle on /jp/, the other part is a moderator who knows where the problems spawn from.

Thanks AoC for your few months of service,
I think we all knew it was an untenable position to take without proper support from the higher ups.

But visit /a/ & /v/ any time of the day and realize what is still great about /jp/
