I think it's genuinely by choice -- to me that sounds a bit like the rationalising of a loser, but let me explain.

I've had the chance to make friends more than a few times. Especially when I was at university, there was often people coming into my life and some trying to stay there. Now, I was always okay with the initial, uh, acquaintance -- but the moment it started turning into a proper friendship I cut it off and left them alone. I'm just not interested in having other people around so the commitment isn't worth bothering with.
