Neither appeals to me strongly. I say, if you're going to write a book, do so. If you're going to make a video game, do so. VNs are glorified CYOAs, and can't hold their own against actual books/video games most days of the week.

I would argue that most things in any particular media is of low quality.
Buy at the same time I can't really bring myself to rant on a medium itself, personal preferences aside.

I don't see how a VN can't hold it's own against "actual books", any scenario-based VN IS a book, albeit a CYOA-type one. As for video games, well, anyone playing a VN for the gameplay elements is doing it wrong, save for the few that make a serious attempt at gameplay like the Eien no Aselia or Baldr Sky series.
