Good doujin in terms of emotional material. I teared up a little when I read it. Although I hated how Flandre learned the technique of ultimate destruction in just a few years, and as a poor human nonetheless. It really grates and keeps me from rating this high as I'd like.

Remilia and Flandre were the daughters of the Scarlet Mansion's owner, a powerful magician. The task of managing the mansion's day-to-day activity fell to Remilia and the head maid, Sakuya Izayoi, as Remilia's father was frequently buried in his work and her sister was bedridden with a mysterious illness. After discovering that Sakuya had secretly been studying magic by reading the tomes kept in the mansion's library, Remilia decided she'd try to find a way to cure her sister supernaturally. In the process, she accidentally summoned a demon, who turned her into a vampire; Remilia then turned her sister in an attempt to heal her. Unfortunately, because Flandre's original malady was magical in nature, it interacted with the vampirism and caused a fever which did considerable damage to her psyche. As the fever ran its course, she killed their father in a fit of pain-induced blind rage (originating in her new bat-like wings, which she tore off while thrashing around in agony). After his death, Remilia automatically inherited the mansion, their terms of service with her father caused the remaining staff to transform into mindless ghouls, completely subservient to their new vampire overlord (sans Sakuya, who had grown strong enough to resist the vampiric spell). With the mansion in chaos, an associate of its original owner, a powerful youkai magician known as Patchouli Knowledge and her bodyguard, Hong Meiling, appeared. They fought and subdued the demon, eventually destroying it and putting an end to Flandre's torturous pain in doing so. During the battle, Patchouli was severely weakened, so opted to remain at the mansion to regain her strength (conveniently helping herself to the library during her stay). Life fell into a strange sort of routine; amid nocturnal abductions and a tapering number of uneasy visitors, those living near the mansion began referring to Remilia as the "Scarlet Devil." Eventually, the name stuck to the mansion as a whole.
