No, they should have shagged and FSN should have been about THEM. The prolouge, so far, even through I'm really enjoying UBW, has been the best part so far.

I mean, we don't know in Fate or HF if Rin and Archer DID have something going on. Shirou's romantic interests were turned away from Rin in those two story lines. I'd say more in Heaven's Feel than Fate though, with Archer taking that shot meant for Rin and living to give his arm to Shirou.

Shinji? He had a terrible mindset. He had told Rider to try and maximize the suffering of Saber, which is one of the reasons Rider lost in Fate, since she wasn't able to allowed and make an instant kill. In general Shinji cares more about torturing others than winning, which bites him in the ass.

Yeah, Shinji's mysogynistic tendancies are a real drawback.. something I guess we can blame on his mother, or the Matou family's misuse of women in general from what we've been able to see. But the rest of his mindset is fairly 'correct' for a magus fighting in the War. He set up that field on the school, and tried to form alliances with those he knew he could at least count on.

Even disregarding the fact he's useless, he's also a terrible tactician. Other than the aforementioned fight against Saber, he also struts around when he Gilgamesh in killing Berserker in UBW, which enables Rin to take him hostage. If he'd been raised as a magus properly, then chances are he might've been more aware of what he could and couldn't do, that's basically the train of thought here - that if Shinji had been raised a magus, he'd have been one of the best magi taking part.

I'm not so sure. Even if he were more skilled, his sadism and drive to torture others over perceived slights would still cause him to lose. To me this trait, as well as his arrogance, seem like part of his mindset, so I'd say that his mindset would be different if he didn't have them.

The reason why Rin and Archer didn't win because neither of them actually had a wish for the Grail. Archer came back to create a time paradox and Rin was just fighting for the grail for her father. She was doing it for honor, but other than that she had no real motivation.

That's why they didn't win.

If both of them actually WANTED the Grail . . .

Well, I think everyone else would have been toast save for Kotomine and Gilgamesh.
