Seriously /jp/. What's so good about Touhou? This is not really a troll thread, I just want to know what the appeal is. I mean I have tried some of the games and they are decent games, but I don't really see all the fuss about the characters and all that since the games are hardly story driven as far as I can tell. What am I missing?

Fanworks. As numerous and varied as the stars in the sky. People find their favored Touhous and build their own Gensokyo.

Touhou is what you make of it.

stay safe, stay secondary

Nothing, actually.

Nothing really OP.
YMMV

The only special thing about it is that people are free to make whatever derivative works they want.

Honestly, so many people kill themselves with copyright.

>> No.6567301

To be honest I think some people have just never read game doujinshi or heard game remixes before they discovered Touhou.

and, shiny lights and colors.

I blame IOSYS for this.
Touhou was fine until the fan base was flooded with people who have never played it. Now should it ever be brought up in real life I'll be forced to feign ignorance because I don't want to be associated with them.

Also, not a lot of story in the game. There is more of it in the manual, among other things.

The best thing about touhou is that there's always other doujin groups which has or will happily pick up aspects you like from the game and improve it so you can pirate for free. Really, it's the fan base that matter.

The second best thing is the experience of playing the games. Rarely you have games so well designed. People often cite cave games as harder but really, 15 years after and they still only have purple bullets? How about OST quality and diversity? Stuff like that count into playing experience too.

But then how will I enjoy all my Touhou yuri doujinshi I'm buying from C79?

>> No.6567398

Pretty danmaku design and how the spellcards are in tune to the music.

Border of Life, anyone?

There's a lot of levels of appeal.
I first got into the games, and appreciated how finely crafted they are. I just love the danmaku gameplay, and the fact that it's complemented by some of the best video game music ever and a decent story, as well as really good characters helps.
Once you get into the characters, you start to really appreciate the fanworks. The thing that really did it for me was playing Eastern Starlight Romance. As people have said, the best part is finding fanworks that depict Gensokyo the way you envision it: I've read quite a few that were OK but nothing great, but ESR was just fantastic because the characters acted just like I had envisioned they would. So hopefully that explains the doujinshi appeal.

So basically, the fans like it because they can do fanfics and stuff freely eh? It's good and all that the fans are productive but I dunno, it feels like I would like to see people try and make more original games instead of just using the same characters over and over again. I have never really liked the idea of fan fiction in excess. Most of the time it just feels like people don't have enough creativity to come up with their own shit, or that they want to satisfy their own selfish needs because the original didn't turn out as they wanted storywise etc.

That's precisely the point of fanfics. Making stuff up on your own without any references is much harder

Sure it's harder but I dunno, I just can't see any fun in that. It feels limiting in the long run, and personally as a person who likes to be creative I could never see myself doing a fan fiction of any kind since I think that most of the joy comes out of creating something that is truly yours. But I guess that might just be me.

Do you press your own paper or make your own ink also? There are always something done by other people which we use as foundation we can focus on the more fun aspects in our work. Even when you do design a new character, you'd quickly find yourself picking up motifs all over the place. In example: youkai buster -> miko -> female, young, long black hair, red&white clothing and stitches, amulet, maybe some ribbons to tie up her hair. Oh wait, this look like reimu or nakoruru maybe I'd just use one of them instead. You get the idea.

If that were true then HELLSINKER would be more popular.

It's a good game with a good story and fun gameplay. The music is very good and the spellcard patterns and art are lovable. It has a lot of appeal.

Maybe it would be if there were like 14 Hellsinker games.

Paper and ink is nothing more than tools for getting output and doesn't really have anything to do with the actual work so no I wouldn't go as far.

I do understand why people do it, it's just that I find it mindless and boring. When I pursue art what excites me is actually creating and having to really put my whole into something to come up with something.

>> No.6568004

>>6567920
Well, Hellsinker does have about the content of 2 Touhou games at the least...

Well, when you make a game, for example, characters and storyline are nothing more than tools and don't really have to do anything with actual gameplay.
