This is why I'll never get a job and embroil myself in the mindless consumerism that has seized the minds of everyone with a fixed wage. I'll never be a puppet of corporations who want me to exchange my time-consuming work for worthless bauble.

Those people are animals, look at how they were herded, look how fat and ripe they are. Look how the corporations bring them in and sheer everything they have. It truly is a farm. All that money will go to China.

Its sad but I will have to disagree that this country is fucked. If things get bad enough, we can always "discover oil" in China. If things get bad enough, we can always go to war and pillage some poor country, looks like North Korea is setting them selves up for a hert. My original post was meant to say something along the lines of you're a pot calling the kettle a nigger. "CONSUMERISM BAD! LOOK AT THEM BUY SHIT! BRB, GOTTA BUY FIGS" is hypocritical, especially since that figures/fan merchandise has no practical purpose at all. Nobody buys a George Foreman grill to have it sit on their counter and do nothing, but that's exactly the reason why people buy figures.

Practicality and function trumps aesthetic value. It's why I would buy something like, a set of frying pans and kitchen stuff over a figure. The one thing I'm against with is if I have a frying pan and the "Super Ultra-Luxe Frying Pan 5000" or some shit comes out, I will not mindlessly throw out the old shit. I still drive a used car that's beat to shit since it's still a god damn car. I'm not in favor of stupid "upgrade" consumerism and I'm not a fan of aesthetic consumerism above practicality, but it the latter is the lesser evil. It's much easier to buy something to last than to buy a new thing every 3 months that costs 3x as much as the original.

A moderate doesn't mean you're completely unaffiliated with everything, it just means you can accept some ideals and reject others...it also means that you're somewhat sensible and can listen to the reasonable arguments of another without flaming them. I have a friend who's a Tea Partier but he actually makes a number of good points that the media doesn't show since nutjobs making asses of themselves is far more entertaining, and he actually respects the opinions of Democrats.

I hate bleeding-heart Liberals and gun-toting Conservatives with a passion since they refuse to listen to anyone else's arguments and don't understand compromise, but I do tend to side with liberals more often so long as they're not complete idiots. Most conservatives I've met are absolutely fucking stupid, but they're naturally stupid without the party affiliation.

A lot of the stuff being sold on Black Friday is actually surplus shitty goods that the companies are trying to get off for as cheap as possible. The big-deal sales are often on items you honestly wouldn't even consider normally due to not being as good as other options... only now, you want it, because it's like 70% off MSRP. Better to sell junk for a small profit than just give it away after having it shelfwarm too long.

They take their obscure bad sellers and turn them into loss-leaders, since they wouldn't actually lose that much by doing so. And people just lap that shit up.

Why buy that model in the first place once it's new? Wait until a better model trumps it and the first one drops in price to a ridiculous degree and buy it then so long as you don't need a functioning refrigerator that day.

As for the "keeping up with the Joneses" argument...I prefer the idea of "mooching off of the Joneses." Make friends who have nicer things than you do. Spend a lot of time with said friends. You now have access to nice things without paying a goddamn cent and you benefit over the mindlessness of others.

I think this is something you don't quite understand. The value of a fig may serve a very important purpose for the individual buying it. It may not be practical in the same way as a grill, but I think it very much does serve a purpose for the people, like myself, who do spend ludicrous amount of money on this stuff.

I agree though, it is somewhat hypocritical, but as I said in another post, I think this type of anger is misderected (in my opinion anyway). It is more disgust with people living for the other, "keeping up with the Joneses" and fretting about "fitting into the community" that is more disgusting. But yeah, I don't know at the end of the day.

How do you honestly feel though, walking through a shopping centre or mall, looking at the people who all look the same, all buying Lady Gaga or Katy Perry records or whatever?

Furthermore, there are advertised deals on items that actually don't blow balls, yes, however if you go to the store and wait outside all night like a faggot, if you weren't among the first like 20 people in line, too bad other 5000 people waiting to stampede for those deals you all came for... none of you get any of the actually good deals, because those are handed out on special vouchers only to the couple of guys at the very front of the line.

There's no real reason to mob up stores like OP's vid anymore. It just looks good for the companies to see their stores bustling full of people + it makes good press and generally companies rely on showing how jam-packed their stores were to build confidence in investors and expansion projects et cetera. This whole Black Friday thing is an exercise in forced artificial scarcity, being implemented to the max. Comparing it to us buying our figs online is truly an apples and oranges thing.

Mindless consumerism is compared to mindless consumerism. Also, some people do get special stuff for preordering early online, no matter what it is.

On a completely different note, I don't hate Black Friday for the sheer number of people mindlessly buying shit, but for the fact that I have to deal with masses of people buying stupid shit. Working retail in one of the largest malls in the country on a high-profile shopping day is not very fun. There were exponentially more black people in the mall on Black Friday than I've ever seen at any other time of the year, and all of them came from the city...and I hate the city folk.

>> No.6548917

>>6548888
I don't think Black Friday has much to do with comparative consumerism, however. It's more about just saving money and getting good stuff for a price you wouldn't see any time else.

What would make for a good example of keeping up with the Joneses, however, would be waiting in line to get an iPad before anyone else.

>> No.6548945

>>6548890

Lastly, the way that Black Friday is handled online is fairly different from how it is handled at actual stores.

At a storefront, like half the crowd came because they saw some ad on TV for a $200 laptop, yet the store will carry literally 10-20 of those. That's hardly even a loss leader, it's just a huge ass piece of bait to lure people into the store. There are also other strategies used in stores such as giving every item in the store a new price tag that looks very similar to the tags of items actually on sale; people caught up in the excitement (and not functioning well mentally due to lack of sleep) easily mistake normally-priced stuff as sale items and plop it into the cart. They can't go check online or on their phones because they're too busy being rushed along because the whole atmosphere is RUSH RUSH RUSH BUY BUY BUY. It's truly an ingenious plan to get people to impulse buy as much shit as they can, complete with the waiting-up-all-night thing.

Online however, it is a much more legitimate endeavor. Stores that don't mislead and condition their consumers have legitimately good deals. Hence the online blitz is called Cyber Monday, not Black Friday. It's evident they're trying to distance themselves from the mass-marketing bullshit. Black Friday is now more important than Thanksgiving itself for many Americans.

>buying records

My thoughts...why the fuck are you buying something easily accessible for free?

Let's deal with something more practical that I have from experience. I've been driving the same car since I was 16. Sure, there have been nicer cars out there on the market that I would like to drive, but I'm fine with my shit car that I've been using for the past 5 years. Others I know will buy a new car every 1.5 years or so simply because their own model is out-of-date or some shit. The only time I buy something new is when the old thing I own is broken beyond repair or lost forever.

A grill isnt a necessity either. You can grill in your back yard with a some wood and sticks. Rushing to buy a grill because its on sale rather than because you will die with out it is a pure greed. Its much more sick than buying a figure because it touches you emotionally. I dunno about that, Black Friday sales are 100% greed. Actually I wouldn't call it greed, I'd call it human conditioning on the part of the stores. It's not some huge conspiracy shit, they just want to make as much profit as possible from this because companies all want growth, -especially- to pull them free of an economic dire straits such as this year.

So some economists and statisticians and survey dudes did some.. surveying etc, and probably found that if the average customer got X% off on Y hot ticket items, he would spend Z more dollars overall on his christmas shopping than he would have if there were no deals going on. That's what Black Friday is all about, maximizing the Z. It's not greed or lust on the part of the consumer, it's greed on the part of the companies.

On the other hand, figurines are actually very difficult for us to get comparatively speaking. For one thing you literally cannot buy most of them unless you order directly from a Japanese site (or worse, some middleman marking it up), also there are exclusive Japan-only items that basically get smuggled out of the country via middlemen because the Japanese actively do NOT want their figures to become a worldwide thing. Rather than take the Black Friday sales strat of "the customer will buy more if he gets one or two things he really wants for less", hobby shops (and the companies that make figurines) take the strategy of "if the customer really wants this one thing only, IF he wants it enough, he will pay through the nose for it". Which is the exact same strategy used to sell art and other one-off items that you get for their exclusivity, rarity etc. Statues are collectibles... laptops, toasters and electric grills are (I hope for your sake) not. That is the difference here.
