I've always felt the same about RPG difficulty. If the difficulty was actually taxing your skills or strategic thinking or whatever, it should be possible for a skilled player, without grinding, to win a boss battle on the first go. Why do you want that? Those things are terrible! The idea that a character's personality changes depending on what choices I make is ludicrous. Their personality is what it is, it should be up to the writer to establish that, not me.

Also, such systems mean you will NEVER see every part of the plot or all of the dialogue the characters have unless you replay the game a million times, each time choosing different answers. I don't necessarily mean that; in fact, I consider that moege style even more trite than final fantasy games.

What I mean is; I want to see more feedback from the game than getting 5% stronger when I level up and having 2 or 3 different tricks I can pull by jewing the stats around. I'd say Final Fantasy V was actually a great example of this because you could very easily mix and match the things you wanted; you could make a melee powerhouse that hit back every time it got hit.

I'd say there are two key things that would impress me, both of which have been commonplace for 10+ years:

-Some form of action gameplay that is slightly more sophisticated than NES zelda without making it a buttonmasher game. Terranigma for SNES was a spectacular example of this (pity it never had an official US release.)

-Some form of feedback in which the player is doing more than just reading walls of text. I really don't like the multi-route style where you're supposed to play the game 12 times, but there could be something like making changes in the layout of the world based on what you do and how you want it.

Strategy involves forming a plan to achieve a goal (in this case, the defeat of your opponent) based on what you know about your opponent and how you predict it will act and react on your actions. But in RPGs you usually don't know what enemies you'll be fighting and how they'll act beforehand. You can make some predictions ("Well, I'm in a fire cave, so the boss will probably be weak to ice"), but mostly you don't know anything before actually engaging it in battle. So you get wiped out. But, now you know its strengths and weaknesses and you can adjust your equipment/skills/party based on that information, so you can engage it again, hopefully more successfully this time.

So basically you're scouting and forming a plan based on that information. That's exactly how strategy works.

>so you get wiped out
Maybe we play different RPGs, but it's generally possible to find out the enemy's weak points and even reorganize the party to some degree in battle. And only an idiot would set up his entire party to only be able to attack with one element, or some such.
That reactionary style of yours must involve a lot of losing and reloading. I'd get annoyed and quit if I played your way.

I remember on his old old website R07 drew some fanart of Rena (Higurashi) cosplaying as Dragoon Lenna.

Wish I could find it.

>But, now you know its strengths and weaknesses
And that's what makes it retarded, because in reality the party couldn't just go in there, first get killed, and depend on simply being restarted afterwards.

It just kills the suspension of disbelief.

If you ignore the obvious hints that a boss is approaching most games employ (including, usually, the existence of a savepoint in the middle of a dungeon), then you deserve to be fucked.

>>6501974
It was a simplified example for the sake of argument. To begin with, RPG battles are mostly tactical in nature, and you need to be able to adapt to the situation on the fly anyway if only because bosses tend to introduce a new kind of attack once they lose a certain amount of HP.
That said, there are bosses that will kill you withit three turns if you're not prepared.

If that kills suspension of disbelief, so does the fact that you can die, yet restart from where you last saved. You want a 40+ hour RPG where once you die, you have to start all over again?
And how exactly do you propose they change this? Bosses by their nature are supposed to be unique. You can't apply what you learned from the Fire Dragon on the Ice Dragon, because the Ice Dragon will employ different tactics from the Fire Dragon. Thankfully, because the game would be dreadfully dull if it didn't. So then, how can you obtain the information to form a plan beforehand? Some kind of preview function where you can watch some other party of adventurers get hopelessly mangled by it at leisure? That's effectively the same as just getting into battle yourself, except you can't experiment.

Oh thanks, I guess he didnt draw it.

I always liked how Rena, Mion, Satoko, and K1 were slightly inspired by Lenna, Faris, Krile, and Bartz.

Hmmmmmm. This is quite difficult.

Agrias > Celes = Faris = Rydia > Krile > Relm > Lenna = Tia > Rosa > Nobody Else Matters.

I'm not that particular Anon, but that's why I love roguelikes. I truly believe games like NetHack and Shiren the Wanderer are far better RPGs than mainstream stuff like Final Fantasy, simply by virtue of a constant uncertainty and the need to re-evaluate your actions on the fly when necessary (you stepped into a trap, what do?).

The threat of death is very real, rather than a constant annoyance, because all of your progress is at stake (usually with some concessions made in some games). It forces a player to be creative with whatever hand they've been dealt, and to suffer the consequences if they can't hack it. The player's choices have very real consequences.

Now, I wouldn't go on to praise the roguelike genre as perfect. Sometimes the games can be real jerks (throwing you into a poisoned spike pit when you haven't even taken a step in NetHack, for example). They often don't have the universes of JRPGS. They're not the most accessible games. But they are better games.

Is the GBA version of FF5 the best version to play or is the original SNES version better somehow

GBA version has new jobs and the best translation, so yeah, it's the best one to play.

I might wait on a 3DS remake, though.
