I read classical literature all the time, actually. I also read most of the books in this thread: http://archive.easymodo.net/cgi-board.pl/jp/thread/6372912#p6372912

Classic literature is wonderful. Actually, all books are good. It's the greatest form of 2D because the characters look like whatever you want.

I used to read books all the time.
I spent my entire childhood and teenage years devouring every book I could find.
I didn't even stop after getting into Japanese entertainment.
However, in the past two years I read maybe 8-10 books total.
I don't know what happened to me.

Already read most classics years ago. They did nothing to me. I felt no sympathy.

But by god did Three Sisters Story strike right at home when I played it the first time. Classic literature? Disappointing.

Never watched a movie based on a book you've read? It's a different medium, and someone else's interpretation. Can be quite interesting (although also disappointing at times).

Mangas and VNs are fun and I can learn Japanese from them, that's all the reason I need to read them. Same goes for everything else I read.
And I generally look down on people who think of themselves as great, cultured intellectuals just because they clawed themselves through some novels they actually thought were boring.

I generally avoid derivative work, yes. They generally end up doing things like leaving out scenes and making characters older. Like in Clockwork Orange, they made the two little girls he had sex with teenagers for the movie release.

>And I generally look down on people who think of themselves as great, cultured intellectuals just because they clawed themselves through some novels they actually thought were boring.

I drop books that I find boring. A good number of classic literature is actually entertaining, though. Besides, you would be surprised how many people clawed their way through Clannad because they wanted to be accepted by /jp/. It's the same thing, really.

Planetarian was glorius because it was short, it made you first, hate the robot, then accept her, after that love her, and then they took her away. I didn't cry only at the ending, the part where they projector fails, and the junker pictures the stars himself moved me to tears. It must have been the images of a long lost past that worked on me.
