From what I read, no more shipments from Japan if they're over 453grams... unless you have business contact.
Mind you, this also affects SAL *AND* EMS.
How the hell are the figs and dolls going to get over here now?!

After Wednesday, November 17th Japan Post will not accept any shipments to the US if the total package weight exceeds 453g. The only exception is if you are a business with a monthly payment contract with Japan Post.

This new measure affects the US as well as US territories/possessions such as Guam and Saipan.

Apparently this is some sort of terror prevention measure.

(I'm guessing this is related to the recent toner cartridge bombs but I really don't see how Japan is related to Yemen. Then again, I often don't understand government "logic".)

The 20kg price is half of what I pay for a return flight to Japan, which includes a 20kg baggage allowance+cabin baggage.

There is no way the price is justified. It's mostly based on monopolies.

When I FedEx'd the R1 Cardcaptor Sakura DVD set from the U.S. to the U.K. it cost like $90.

I've been wondering if FedEx has some kind of bulk contract deals with businesses where they can ship stuff way cheaper than what they charge individuals for single shipments. Otherwise I don't see how Amazon Japan can make a profit using FedEx Priority the way they do (pic related, that's 2-day shipping from Japan to the U.S.).

If you preorder multiple items that stretch across multiple months, and leave the shipping set on "ship all at once," Amazon calculates shipping like it was all on one box, but they go ahead and ship each item as it comes out (for their own convenience, apparently) and split the total shipping cost across them.

Yeah I think Amazon is more of a video buyer's place, with the 26% discount on DVD/BD + the way TV series are sold one volume per month for 6+ months, lending themselves to that sort of pre-ordering. Then once they've got a video order going anyway, they toss on a few books or CDs or whatever.
