I liked Genki. I wouldn't use it outside a class, but it was good.

Genki is lightyears beyond the books we used in high school, I'm sad to say.

I did. Genki textbooks are pretty decent, but relying on them alone obviously wouldn't be enough. I suggest trying out various books, audio, and computer programs. If you can, practice with someone who is also at the same level of knowledge and interest, or if you're lucky enough to have someone teach you. But never ever rely on anyone completely, as they could be teaching you wrong. So always stick to your own studies, check your answers, practice everyday, etc.
