Just made her. Deciding on which mage class now. Elementalist is out since I lack funding (even though Ele would be the closest to Orpha), and I played a Battle Mage before and didn't like the chaser system too much. So, Summoner or Witch?

Witch is a perfect character as a starter as it goes far with just the normal gear and rarely runs out of mana

Depends on your goals.

If you want to party your way to end game:
Play anything, but Elem/Witch > Battle Mage/Summoner for parties

If you want to solo your way to end game:
Elementalist (decent weapon required at high levels) or Summoner (assload of patience required at high levels). Battle Mages burn through mana too quickly and at the highest levels Witches have issues beating King's Road boss regen even with Ice Drill, their highest DPS spell.

If you want to be successful in PvP:
Battle Mage >= Elementalist > Witch >>>> Summoner
